House training question
So we just got a 12 week old Italian Greyhound last week. With all this cold weather and snow he wants nothing to do with outside. The few times we have brought him out he literally sits on top of my feet and cries. So I read that I could paper train him inside and then when the weather gets nicer bring the paper outside so he catches on. I still can't get him to on the paper at all though!! The only time he will go is right after he's been sleeping all night and we take him out and put him on the paper. But aside from that he will pretty much go wherever he wants.
So I guess my queston is at what age do they have complete bladder and bowel control and can really be trained. I dont want to yell at him now if he really can't help it. But on the other hand I don't want him to think it's ok to go anywhere.

Re: House training question
the first weekend we had hershey, we had a HUUUUGE snow storm... like a foot of snow! he was also 12 weeks old so i totally feel your pain!
however, hershey was really good -- all we had to do was shovel a path for him to walk and he would poop outside... of course he had accidents in the house, thats expected... but in terms of the weather, hershey has never had issues with doing his buisness outside
the rule of thumb is usually however many months old they are, thats how long they can hold their pee/poo... so for example, if a dog is 5 months old, they can hold it for a max of 5 hours... 6 months old, 6 hours etc etc
are you crate training him? we had a lot of success with crate training hershey when he was real young. also, when he does poo/pee in the house you need to catch it right away and show them the mess and say "NO" sternly and take them right outside so they know they are suppossed to do that outside
also -- if you catch them peeing/pooing in the act, pick him up and bring him outside -- even if he's in mid pee lol we did this with hershey and i think that helped a lot!

Re: House training question
We got our pup last December and had the same problem! We paper trained him at first bc it was so cold out. He would pretty much just pee anywhere at first, but everytime I saw him about to do it, I caught him in the act, picked him up and brought him to the scented wee wee pad. I did this every single time. I think the trick is to really pay close attention to their behaviors and catch them in the act. My pup would pace and sniff around a lot before he pee'd, so I would know when he was going to go, before he did. Also, I read that it takes 15 minutes from the time that dogs drink, for them to pee. I actually timed it and it's so true!! We stopped keeping his bowl full all day and just gave him water at certain times. This really helped when it was time to train him to go outside. After 15 minutes, we would take him outside. I hope this helps!!!

Re: House training question
Dallas is 4 months. I take him out, from the time we get up every two hours. He poops 3x a day, once when he wakes up, once mid-day & once before bed. He sleeps in his crate at night & when we go to work. He never goes in his crate and can stay in there for 6-8 hours.
Keep track of when your dog poops, so you know what to expect. Try to let him pee every 2 hours, if he has accidents then try 1.5
