House training small breeds???

I temporarily lost my mind and bought a dog.

I grew up with large breed dogs my whole life and know how to house train a 110 lb dog. I have no idea how to handle a 13 lb dog. The guy I bought him from said to use wee-wee pads outside the crate by the back door and to crate train. I'm totally cool with that. He said I can't take him outside yet. He's an 8 week Cairn Terrier.

Does anyone have any good tips? Can I take this dog outside?

We're going to take him to the vet this week for a checkup. In the mean time, we're having a hard time getting him to actrually go on the wee-wee pad. He prefers my carpeting at this point in time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
