Re: housebreaking....

I hated training my puppy!!! It was really hard, and felt like it took FOREVER! We used wee wee pads, but he liked to eat them - even after he peed on them, which was nasty. What we did was took him out first thing in the morning....we put his leash on before we took him out of his "room" (We didn't use a crate but made him a little boxed in area in the laundry room), and basically ran him out of the apartment. Sometimes a little dribbled out on the way, but it gave him the idea that he had to go outside. When he was a little puppy, I took him out at least every 2 hours, even if he didn't go. At night, we took the water away from him about an hour before bed time so that he wouldn't go during the night, and took him out one last time right before putting him back in his room. He never told us that he had to go outside, just like your puppy, so we just tried to know for him by taking him out so often. Of course you have to yell at the puppy when they have accidents so they learn that's wrong. Once they get older and their bladders are stronger, they can hold it in longer and you don't have to take them out so much. We gave him treats outside when he went so that he'd know he was doing something positive. Like I said, it took a reallllly long time to get him to stop having accidents (he's 2 years old and still sometimes poops inside), but I think if you get them used to going out at certain times of the day (or after meals, something they can understand), they'll get the hang of it. In the meantime, stock up on carpet cleaner!!!

Re: housebreaking....

we used a crate.

we put in a divider to make it small enough that she wouldn't go inside. immediately upon coming out of the crate, we would take her outside to go. we would also take her out right before putting her back in. when she was out and about, we would take her out every 45 min to an hour. that was when she was little (8 weeks-3 months). as she got older we were able to spread this out more. if we caught her starting to go in the house we would startle her mid-"business" and bring her outside. every time she went outside we made a big deal out of it (LOTS of praise). we basically had to get her outside to go before she could think of going. when she would go through rocky patched of going on the floor in spite of all our visits outside, she would spend more time in the crate--not out of punishment, but because it's a way to make sure they get into the routine. they need to be supervised ALL THE TIME while housebreaking because it only takes a second or 2 for them to go inside, and you don't want them to get into a habit of thinking that's okay.
