Houses with 1 bathroom

We currently have 1 bathroom in our apartment and have made do for almost 10 years. Now that we are looking at houses, I'm surprised how many have 1 bath. We are not ruling them out because we know we can add one somewhere down the line, but if you currently have a HOUSE with 1 bath, AND you have kids...tell me the truth! Chat Icon Is it awful?

Houses with 1 bathroom

We have 1 bathroom, a 2 yr old and one more on the way. I honestly don't think it's bad at all. We bought a house we could afford and we live with it. I don't know how we will feel down the line with older kids, but we have a finished basement we are considering at some point adding a bedroom and bathroom downstairs...

We have 1 bathroom and 2 kids (one 6 year old and one 8 month old). I wish I had another bathroom and that it was upstairs but we make do!

I had a one bath growing up. We made do but it was hard as we got older and all in HS together. 3 girls, mom and dad. There were fights and stuff but you can make do.

In my house now we have 1 full bath and 1/2 bath. This makes it eaiser but I wish we had another shower downstairs.

We had 1 bathroom for a while. We had gutted the 2nd and didn't complete it for a couple of years. It wasn't terrible. I do have to say having 2 is sooo much better. Especially now with 2 kids that use the toilet and with house guests. You can definitely make do though.

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

DH and I lived with one bathroom for a long time (10 plus years). It wasn't always easy but we made it work.

Even now, we have a 2nd bathroom and it rarely is used. Good Luck!

Houses with 1 bathroom

I have one bathroom and while I'd love one upstairs we make due. It's 3 of us but my parents stay with us a few weeks at a time and even then it's never been an issue.

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

I grew up in a house with essentially one bath. There was technically a half bath in the basement, but no one really used it, so family, guests, etc. all used the one bathroom. At times it was annoying having to schedule a shower but not a hardship by any means.

I think another factor to consider -- aside from having all family members share one bath -- is guests. My current home has 2.5 bathrooms (a master, a hall bath, and then a half bath off the den). I think it's convenient that guests can use a half bath that is easy to keep clean and neat, versus having to use a bathroom where all of our personal stuff is because we shower and get ready there.

So if a house has 1.5 baths, and the half bath is conveniently located, I think that could work well, too.

The value of a 1 bathroom home is always going to be somewhat capped, because most people want at least 1.5 baths. So you should also consider resale value (although many times, as you said, there's room to add a second bath somewhere). But on the flip side, if you have a somewhat limited budget for an area where you are looking, a one bathroom home may be all you can realistically get. And I would certainly let location trump a second bath, as a bath can be added down the road (and location is forever).

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

I have never lived anyplace without one bathroom. There are 4 of us, 1 tween, 1 teen and 2 adults and it is doable.

Houses with 1 bathroom

We grew up with 1 bathroom and it was very hard. We were constantly fighting especially when we were teenagers trying to get ready in the mornings at the same time as my parents and I always hated there was no privacy. Everyone knew how long you were in there lol.

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

Not bad at all. We have (2) bathrooms - well, one and 1/2. The 1/2 bathroom is on the 1st floor and we RARELY use it. So, it's me, hubby & DD in one bathroom. It's fine.

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

We have a one bath house. We live in a single-story ranch, so it's not like we have to go up flights of stairs to pee. We've had parties and it's not a big deal. I would like two baths in our next house, but it's not a total deal breaker.

I grew up in a house with 2 baths, and it wasn't that different - you couldn't use the two showers at the same time w/o freezing the other person.

Houses with 1 bathroom

I grew up in a 1 bath house. My house now has 2 full baths.
I never had a problem with only 1 bath. We all knew the drill. Everyone respected everyone's time.
Having 2 baths now, I will say that 1 of them is hardly ever used. I could totally do without it. I'll wait for the hall bath to be empty before I will use the other bath.

We have 1 1/2. We added the 1/2 upstairs. I'm so glad we did because I couldn't imagine having to run downstairs in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Ideally I wish we had two showers for when the kids get bigger but we'll make do. I had four kids in my family growing up and we made 1 shower work.

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

DH and I have two full baths, and it is just the two of us. I find it convenient that if we are getting ready to go out, we both can shower in our separate bathrooms. When we look for a larger house, I really would only want to look at 2+ bathrooms.

That's what I'm used to though. Growing up, we had 3.5 bathrooms in our first house, and 3 in our second. DH grew up in a house with one, and he has never expressed that it was an issue.

Houses with 1 bathroom

We have a one bathroom house. We just dormered and added a second bathroom. It will be finished at some point, but for now it's a shell. We haven't had too much of an issue with only the 1 bathroom. I can't wait for that second bathroom though!

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

I grew up in a 1 bathroom house for quite a few years. Definitely not fun, especially during Jr. High and HS with two siblings roughly the same age.

Right now, we have 3 full baths, and with all 4 of us waking up at pretty much the same time for work and school, I sometimes think about adding a 4th... Chat Icon

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

I grew up with 1 bathroom. There were 6 of us living there and then 8 when my BIL & SIL were there constantly.

I hated every minute of it. I would run to my friends down the block sometimes when I was desperate.

When we were looking, there was no way I'd buy 1 bath and it' only the 2 of us! hahaha Now we fight over the upstairs bathroom bc we prefer it lol

Re: Houses with 1 bathroom

We didn't add the second bathroom untul this year and my boys were 3 & 5.
Hoenstly, it bothered my DH more that it bothered me. I didn't have a problem with it.

I LOVE the fact that we now have the additional bathroom - but life wasn't miserable w/o it

Houses with 1 bathroom

We have one bathroom on the main level and then a full bath in the finished basement downstairs. I've used the downstairs one... maybe 10 times in 3 years. However, I love having it b/c that's where DH does his business lol.

Houses with 1 bathroom

We had 2 full baths in our last home, 3 full baths in our current home. My kids are adults now so it's usually just the two of us but we do entertain often and have house guests several times a year, having three baths makes it really easy.
My daughter is such a bathroom hog, she takes really really long showers and she was such a cranky teen, I think we would have had big problems if we were all sharing a bathroom with her during those times. My son is a slob and nobody wants to share a bathroom with him so it was great that they each had their own and DH and I had the master.
