How bad is sleeping on your back?
We have had many discussions on it, and so far my Dr. hasn't mentioned it. She said just to get as much rest as I can and possibly try to start to sleep on my side since it's the only way you'll be able to sleep later on the the pregnancy.
I mean, I wake up on my back all the time, and also find that this is the only way that I can fall asleep again after trying to be on my side.
What have your dr.'s told you about this?

I'm curious too - I am going to ask my dr tomorrow at my appt.
I wake up on my back all the time, and I am scared I am doing harm to the baby!

I think actually it does more harm to you then your baby. It stops the blood from flowing from your legs back to your heart . I read it in Your Pregnancy week by week.

Re: How bad is sleeping on your back?
The info I have read says that after 16 weeks, you shouldn't sleep on your back, b/c it puts pressure on your vena cava, which restricts blood flow.
I have found that around that time, or shortly after, I wasn't really able to stay on my back for long, because my breathing wasn't comfortable anymore. I do occasionally still nap on my back, but I prop myself up with pillows.

Thats what i have read also.. You will find as you get bigger that it hurts to get up when you sleep on your back.

I don't like sleeping on my side. It hurts my hip. DH keeps yelling at me when he catches me on my back but I'm more comfortable that way.

Re: How bad is sleeping on your back?
I asked my Dr and was told I had no reason not to sleep on my back. She said I should sleep as much as I can now....

Re: How bad is sleeping on your back?
its better for you to sleep on your left side but if you find your slef wakeing up on your back that is fine. It is due to the blood flow in your boady as other girls had posted :) Just try and get as much sleep as possibel

I am going to have a hard time with this, because I wake up and find myself sleeping on my belly.

As you get further along, you probably won't be able to sleep on your belly at all

Re: How bad is sleeping on your back?
How bad is it?????????????? It is supposed to be harmful to you the mommy, not the baby, but I personally don't think anyone knows for sure. However, the fact that you keep waking up on your back is your body telling you it is uncomfortable.

I am a strong believer that if something is bad for you, your body will tell you.

I am a total stomach sleeper, but lately it's just not comfortable, so I don't do it as much. However, with some strategically placed pillows, I can still get away with it!!

Re: How bad is sleeping on your back?
sleep on it for as long as you want.
Once you get uncomfortable you'll move. Its not BAD per say for you or the baby. Its just, later on in PG you won't be comfortable cause of the weight on the vena cava and the back pain.
Once you feel like you can't really breathe, or feel back aches (like I do) you won't want to. I can tell you I am about 24 weeks, and I still sleep on my back - though some nights I can't because of back pains and than I don't.

Re: How bad is sleeping on your back?
Thank you ALL for your responses.
I'm about to lose my mind because of lack of sleep. I will sleep on my back until I can't anymore.
