How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
Husband and I just started house hunting and I can not believe how small the bedrooms are in pretty much every house we have seen.
We saw one house where we really like the living spaces but I can not get past the small bedrooms. Smallest room was 8x10 and the master was 13.5 x 11.25. The 3rd room was 9.2x11.
We currently have a queen size bed but wanted to upgrade to a king when we final buy a house.
Please share the measurements of the bedrooms in your homes NOT including the closet space.
I'm just curious as to what is normal/average on Long Island.
Thanks!

Those bedrooms are a bit on the smaller side, but not unheard of either. What area are you looking in and what style of house? That can play a big role in the size bedrooms you'll find.

Mind are roughly the sizes you posted. It is what it is for me. I can't afford a massive house. Bedrooms are just for sleeping so I got over it and made it work. I love my house. I have a tri level split and feel I have plenty of space.
My master is 10x12 bedroom 2 is a shoe box I think like 10x7 and bedroom 3 is 10x9
ETA- my development is from the 1950s

Small capes and Levittown style homes are smaller. Those room sizes, especially 8x10 are tiny. I think it depends what town you are looking in. Homes built in the 1950s are smaller. It really depends upon your price range. Higher prices usually translate into bigger bedrooms. I think if it is a 400 k home those sizes would be expected.

We have a split with small bedrooms, I think the smallest is 9x11 and my son always complains that he has no room and wants a full size bed. But what can you do, I'm not a millionaire.

Thanks for the responses! I guess we will need to keep the room sizes in perspective considering we are looking in the $300k range and our options are already limited.. I just never realized this was the norm on Long Island. I guess I was pretty spoiled growing up in my parents house especially because their house in less desirable town that most LIFers always say to stay away from. I assumed that the "nicer" areas of Sufiolk county where the houses are bigger would have bigger rooms.
We are mainly looking on the south shore and mid island towns in Suffolk. We do not want to go past Nichols Rd(exit 62 on lie) because I currently work in Bethpage.

How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
My bedroom is 13x20 not counting the walk in closet or bathroom. My first house had a 16x20 matter. I have a 5 bedroom and our smallest bedroom is 12x10 and it's much smaller than the other rooms. I'm in Suffolk on the south shore. Larger rooms were a priority for me. If they are for you, you can find something! My first house was a 3 bedroom with larger rooms for $270, so it's definitely attainable!

Re: How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
It's a problem We are having as well. I have a one bedroom co op and my bedroom is huge compared to most of the homes we have looked at. We are pretty much giving up on port Washington because the bedrooms are a joke. Only house with nice sized rooms was a house we saw on Sunday for 1.5 million. ( wayyy out of our price range but we had time to kill.)And even the master bedroom in that house was only a tad bigger than mine. It sucks.
I'd rather have a larger living space and smaller bedrooms than the opposite. I'm NEVER in my bedroom

Yes it is very frustrating. For us the yard space is VERY important. I also would prefer for the living space to be larger but I also don't want my bedroom to feel like a shoebox.
We are just hoping to find something with good bones. A decent size rooms with a large yard... we are prepared to do renovations if needed.

How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
We are in Holbrook. We have a 3BR house. The master is about 15x15. I think. I may be guessing. It has a walk in closet and bath. We have a king sized bed and 2 dressers and 2 nightstands and the room is pretty full. Just enough room to walk around the bed between the bed and the dresser. The largest BR we actually use as a playroom. It is odd shaped but probably 20x15. The smallest BR is my son's room and it is about 15x11. We only use the BR to sleep, so don't really need a lot of room in them. We have a ranch and plenty of space in other areas. Whole rooms we have no use for. When we were looking I found ranches to have the most spacious BR's and layouts. Hi-ranches were too cramped for us and that was my desired house style I thought. I had no interest in a colonial, so I don't remember looking at any. For your price range there are some homes available in the Ronkonkoma/Holbrook area but they may need some work. All of the properties on my street measure 100x100 so pretty large. That's my whole neighborhood it seems.

Re: How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
You have to remember that the majority of homes on Long Island were built in the 1950s and 1960s. In some areas, there are older homes from the early 1900s or even late 1800s.
Older homes tend to have smaller rooms and less closet space than new or newer construction homes. People were smaller back then (lol) and lived more simply, whith less stuff.
We live on an island so new construction is at a premium, and not affordable for most.
But a lot of buyers on LI are used to watching real estate shows on TV, like house hunters, that feature much larger, newer homes in other parts of the country.
I'll just say what I tell a lot of my buyers -- people don't really "live" in their bedrooms. Even kids - I remember growing up, everyone used to keep toys in their rooms, and have play dates in their rooms. Now, most people have play rooms or basements. So try to remember that bedrooms are primarily for sleeping, and especially for the secondary bedrooms (that are kids' rooms or guest rooms or offices), you don't need a ton of furniture.
I'd rather (and most buyers would rather) have common living space to entertain versus having a lot of square footage in the bedrooms. Even for the master - sometimes you can get a king sized master, but often they are queen-sized rooms. You can sometimes fit a king if you sacrifice other furniture (like don't have nightstands or only have one). But I would judge the house on a whole on how it works for you and how much space it offers overall for your family's needs, not on bedroom size along.
Another thought is that if it's a 4 bedroom home, sometimes you can knock a wall between 2 bedrooms to make it 3 bedrooms with a large master (by combining two smaller rooms). You don't really lose value by going from a 4 bed to a 3 bed, especially if you add a large master as a feature (and a wall that is removed can always be put back up.
Also, as you keep looking, you will get a better idea of what your price point will afford you and what realistic compromises will need to be made.

How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
I think it is the housing inventory on Long Island. I had to get over it myself when we were looking. Especially in the high ranches. I grew up in Rockland County in a 'newer' house so the rooms in our house were a little bigger. While a big house and big rooms are nice, it's easier to keep a smaller space clean!

Re: How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
We live in a ranch and our bedrooms are fairly small. The master is 12X14, one bedroom is 10X13, and the other bedroom is only 8.5X11. My 2 sons shared the 10X13 room and had enough space. They are all relatively small, but have enough space to suit our needs.

Thanks for the info! We are definitely going to continue our search with a new perspective as the yard is top priority followed by a decent kitchens and living area. And if there is a playroom/area we can definitely live with the smaller room sizes.

How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
The master is 15x20 and my DD's room is 15x15, then we have two really small bedrooms about 9x10 each. One we use as an office and one is an extension of DD's room - she has a desk in there and a reading nook/bookcases.
For us, bedrooms were not as important as living space. We do not hang out in our bedrooms at all so as long as it fit our furniture we were good to go. My non negotiable was to have a playroom that could be closed off on the main level. That limited our search alot but we found one : ).

How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
I would love if the smallest bedroom was 8 x 10!!!!!! I think those rooms are somewhat typical for older homes. And I look at it as we are not spending time in our bedrooms except to sleep. Why have a huge room.

Sounds typical of normal house on LI. I think those measurements are pretty much what my mother's colonial are. I think if you want huge bedrooms, you need to look at new ( or newer construction). Most of these house were built between 1920-1950....they did not do huge bedrooms or closets then.

Re: How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
Our master (OOS) is 17 x 18 not including master closets or master bath, those are in a separate space. The only time I'm in there is to sleep. I don't need all the space. My kids also have large bedrooms and they are only in there to sleep as I keep no toys in their rooms.
Just think about what size you need - too small is a problem but depending on your living style, after a certain size it sort of becomes wasted space. Living space and yard space are way more important for me.

How big/small are the bedrooms in your house?
Our house currently is in a less desirable area and I wish I could just move it to a better school district. My backyard is 100x100. My master is 16x20 with a full wall of closets and a full bath. Dd's room is 10x12 and my office is 12x14. Every house we look at won't fit my brand new king sized bed and furniture. We are in the lower budget too.

Same . The third bedroom is so small, I really hate it. With a twin and some furniture , there is no space.
