How did you decide to change/leave districts?

I am in year 3 of working with NYCDOE.

It is about an hour commute each way. I have been interviewing on Long Island for administrative and teaching jobs.

One job looks very good for being offered a teaching position for next year. Besides being a lot closer to home, I am sure the pay would be more.

I get uneasy about job security.

If you left/changed, how did you handle your uneasiness? What made you leave/change?

I left because I was excessed. I always stayed in DOE bc of security. I am a guidance counselor and too weary of excessing to do the LI jump. That said if I were math or science I would feel differently. So for me it depends on what your area is HTH Chat Icon

I am math. I just hate the uncertainty of long island.

See for me I feel like even if I get excessed I still get paid until I find a job, in LI when you are excessed you are gone...math is def more secure than guidance but still makes me nervous, good luck! Chat Icon

I will not apply on Long Island for this reason. I am being excessed at the end of the year and while it is stresssflul looking for a job at least I have the security in knowing I will have a paycheck working for the DOE.

I was hired on LI then after 3.5 years, was excessed :( I am now in the DOE and appreciate the security. My old district still has a few years to recall me, but I'm terrified that lay offs will happen again if they do recall me...

Though the salary is higher on long island, I'm taking home more $ now b/c I don't pay nearly as much in insurance premiums for my family since I'm with the DOE. I signed up for the SAME insurance I had in my old district

Many Long Island districts are excessing A LOT of teachers due to budgeting issues with the tax cap and low/decreasing enrollment. I was excessed the same year I was tenured, but was fortunate in that I always had a full time position due to an extended maternity leave and finally was officially reinstated after a retirement in my department. I luckily have jumped the woman in my department who took the maternity leave and am no longer low man on the totem pole. IMO, I wouldn't leave a job in which I had security to go to a district where I would have no seniority, no tenure, and little job security. It just doesn't make sense to me in this economic climate.
