How Did You Find Your Last Job?

I'm just curious how important networking is 'cus I haven't found a single job through it. Most of my jobs are found through recruiters or newspapers.

There's not alot of activity on the Career board so please don't mind if I put this thread here to get more responses.

Feel free to tell what you do for a living as that also influences the answer. Thanks!

My current job of 14 years is right across the street from the place I worked 10 years before I was a SAHM for 5 years! Phewww
I saw an ad in the paper when I needed to go back to work after my divorce and I applied. They noticed my app. among the hundreds because of where I worked before!Also it turns out I knew the Owners daughters DH from talking to him on the phone for years at my previous job.



I am an Office Supervisor and do the Accounting and Computer stuff as well as being the Saftey Manager.

DH's friend needed a bookkeeper and I needed a job, so it worked out for us both.

the last job I got was through networking - family style

My sister worked there and told me about an opening they had. I applied, interviewed and got the job.

My current and last job, I got through a headhunter.

The one before that through Monster. My first job out of college, the company recruited on campus.

It was vaguely advertised in the NYT through a Head Hunter.

Networking, actually!!! a friend of a friend (who I had met on a few occasions) knew of a job opening at his school and called me, the rest is history!

I submitted my resume online and it turns out it was to a headhunter, who I met with first, then met with the company and got the job.

I've found all of my jobs through networking. I work as a defense contractor.

This week I am actually starting 2 new PT jobs.

My 1st I found on Craigslist (Camp Director).

2nd I found right here on the Career Board thanks to a fellow LIFer (she knows who she is )

I start my new job next week and I found it by doing a search on google for colleges in the area and applying directly on their website.

My last job I found by contacting someone who worked for the company.

My first job I found through a headhunter.

i found all of my jobs on an online job posting site. I've worked with recruiters but nothing ever came from it.

Networking has never helped me. In fact, it hurt me unfortunately. I work in public relations specializing in travel so when I went to leave my first job (a travel pr firm) and apply to all of the others, the owners of the other companies would say on the phone - before the interview - "well this is a conflict of interest. Are you aware that the head of our company knows the head of yours."

ETA: I ended up having to leave the travel pr world for my second job and when I applied again to the travel pr firms (I didn't like my second job and ended up getting fired anyway) I had to make a point in my cover letter that I was no longer at my first place, the place where they knew my boss.

I'm back in travel again and loving it.

I did my graduate program intern placement at the hospital and my chief offered me a position prior o graduation, I'm still there 10 years later

Wow, I'm surprised to hear how effective online jobhunting is for everyone. I too have found alot of jobs through online job ads and recruiters.

Was also expecting more people to choose networking. :)

One of the people on my staff was a temp for 3 months and we hired her full time.

I guess it would be through networking. My friend worked at my current job before me and knew they were looking for a Spanish speaking social worker. So she called me and had me fax my resume ASAP. I was hired the same day I interviewed.
