Every job I've ever had, with the exception of my current, I've gotten through networking.

My first job out of college, the employer wouldn't even interview me because I was an anthropology major. The career director, whom I had a good relationship with, called the employer and told them they really needed to interview me. They interviewed me, and I got the job.

My first job out of law school - I was rejected by the District Attorney's office, I was in a panic, so I called my professor and asked him what I should do. He called a firm he used to work with, told them they should interview me, I interviewed, and got the job.

This job though, is a federal position, so I responded to the vacancy on USAJOBS.com.
