How did you make the decision? UPDATED
Update: He's gone.
I am devastated - walking around in a daze with tears constantly ready to come out.
This is worse than I thought it would be (and I knew it would be bad.)
Can anyone suggest places I can donate his medication and an opened but somewhat full bag of food near Hicksville?
I have never been through this and it's horrible. **************************
I was wondering if someone can share how they made the decision to put their dog/cat/etc. to sleep.
Jake is an 11 year old cocker with a million problems.
It's eye, ear, and skin problems, and a constant cough that they cannot find a cause for.
He also has an autoimmune disease.
I realize I'm not giving a lot of details. I don't expect anyone to tell me what I should do; I guess I am looking more for the how - the logic - that caused you to make the decision to euthanize.
I have had him forever and I hate seeing him like this. He is my furbaby.

Re: How did you make the decision?
So sorry you are going through this. I know it's a tough position to be in but at some point in time we've all gone through it.
For me, I was old enough to help decide with my parents about putting our past two dogs down.
The first was back in 1999; she was almost 18, a mutt. When it got to a point where my dad had to hold her up in the backyard to do her business, we made the decision to euthanize her.
The most recent was this past year; although they live OOS, I saw them often, and with the dog. She was a shepard mix and 14 years of age. It got to a point where she couldn't really get up on her own anymore; she slowly started dwindling on the eating; she couldn't really make it outside to urinate. She would barely make it. So my parents decided to take her and euthanize her.
I think it comes down to a point of determining the pets quality of life; if it comes to a point where they are struggling to live a good, happy and enjoyable life, then maybe it's time to make that decision.
Best of luck to you during this difficult time. Sending you lots of hugs.

How did you make the decision?
I had to decide for my cat. We were together for almost 15 years. But I could tell he was getting bad. I knew that I would not do any expensive testing or procedures to extend his life. But he was suffering and I could see it. I asked hubby to call the vet and take care of it. I couldn't do it. He kept putting it off thinking the cat would get better. That never happened. About 4 months after I began to ask him to take care of it I came home from work to a crying cat. He passed away about 5 minutes later in my lap. I was devastated and so upset that he had suffered for so long. It's hard to do but sometimes really is the best thing for everyone.

Re: How did you make the decision?
So sorry that you are going thru this.
I would ask myself, is the dog suffering in anyway, is the quality of his life affected by his health. If the answer is yes, then it might be time to make this difficult decision.
My cat Munchkin was 5 weeks old when I got him, and 13 years old when I had to make the God-awful decision to put him down.
He was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma in his jaw. Part of his tongue had to be cut during the biopsy, and he had growths in his jaw that were interfering with his ability to eat. It is a fast growing cancer that cannot be cured and there is no treatment except for pain management. My baby was slowly starving because he could not eat properly. He would also bit his tongue once in a while and bleed like crazy.
I came home one day to find him sitting there with a look in his eyes that I can only describe as "help me". He was just a shadow of himself, barely had a voice left. It was then that I called the vet to make the appointment. I had kept hoping that he would just pass on his own, but....
It was only 5 weeks from diagnosis to the decision. Heartbreaking, but even more heartbreaking to watch him suffer.

I'm so sorry you're in this position. I think the time comes when you have to ask if you're keeping him alive for him or for you? I know I would NEVER want to let my babies go willingly, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily the right thing. You and your pup are in my thoughts.

When she could no longer make it outside to the bathroom, when she could no longer go up or down stairs, when her legs starting literally giving out on her, we knew it was time. It remains one if the hardest things I've ever done.

Re: How did you make the decision?
Thank you all.
He is on another month worth of medications and then after that we'll revisit the ophthalmologist. If his eyes still aren't making tears and he needs surgery, that will be telling.

It was only 5 weeks from diagnosis to the decision. Heartbreaking, but even more heartbreaking to watch him suffer.
I also had a cat with squamous cell carcinoma. I had to make the decision when she had no more tongue. The vet simply said, she can't live like this with not being able to eat or drink water. I think when the vet said that, it made a tough decision easier.
Another cat I had had kidney disease. My family and I had been giving him fluids twice a week for a few years. There was one week he just looked so bad, and he had a seizure at the end of that week. He was lifeless and we had him put to sleep after that seizure.
Another cat I had passed right in front of me. I still feel awful guilt because he suffered. I had planned on bringing him to the vet that day.
With the last animal I had to put to sleep, DH and I were kind of arguing about that. He wanted him to just pass on his own. But I knew he wasn't enjoying life at all. I was syringe feeding him and taking care of him around the clock (it was in between semesters for me), and I personally just couldn't do it anymore. He was a 4 month old kitten and I knew this is not how a kitten should live. He wouldn't play and just sat and slept. I knew he wasn't enjoying life anymore.
When I see they aren't enjoying life anymore then I know it's time. Usually when they stop eating is a signal for me and I start looking closer at their quality of life.

I'm so sorry.
It's the most difficult and selfless decision a pet parent can make. They truly become a party of your family and losing them is so painful. It's very generous of you to be thinking about donating his meds.

So sorry for you :( They are such a big part of our lives and they take a huge piece of your heart with them. There is a program called break the chain that will accept your donations. Some places don't take opened food but I know they do! They have a Facebook page that you can check out. You can even mail them the medications if you don't want to make the drive. My heart hurts for you

I am so sorry for your loss...I know exactly how you feel since I just had to put my beloved boy down on Friday...I can't believe how much it hurts and I've dealt with many family members dying over the years. My dog was diabetic..the vet took his leftover needles...I am going to see if the town shelter can use all his heartworm and flea medicine we still have. Many hugs to you..

Re: How did you make the decision? UPDATED
Thank you all so much for your kind words. They mean a lot; people in my circle of family and friends collectively haven't said much to acknowledge it. I know it's probably because they are really not animal people but it still hurts.
Bearcat and Kittykatcooper, I am so sorry.

Thank you thank you SO much for this recommendation! They are taking everything I had for him - all the meds and everything! I just dropped it off yesterday. Thanks so much. It means a lot to me that it didn't go to waste.
