How do I get my 3yr old to STOP constantly putting his hands in his mouth?

Now that he is in school every day this has b/c a huge problem. My DS always seems to have a finger in his mouth or his hand by his mouth, or sucking on the side of his hand, etc. etc. its like a subconscious habit - i have no idea why he does this and it is driving me nuts. I watch everyday as the teacher holds his hand and walks him into the classroom after touching 10 other snotty hands and I know that same hand will be in his mouth in 10 seconds I tell him repeatedly to stop doing it and at home will take his hand away from his mouth but, he still does it b/c he doesn't even realize he is doing it!

I'm interested to know too b/c DD started this at school & when she's nervous, when people talk to her. She'll put her hand in her mouth (or stick out her tongue). I know its probably a comfort thing & related to shyness, but yuck (total germs) besides. She's 3 also.

I'd love to know, too! We have been dealing with the same thing. I feel like a broken record all day long with "hands out".

Ugh, same here. DD is 3 1/2 and just started school and ALWAYS has her hands in her mouth. I just make sure to constantly wash her hands when we are at home, but don't know what to do the other times, except tell her to stop. I'm very grossed out when I see her do it, especially when I know that they go to the bathroom by themselves (the bathroom is in the classroom) and how many 3 year olds really know how to wash their hands properly without someones assistance.

Jack does this when he's nervous, or intimidated. It drives me crazy. I am constantly telling him to not put his hands in his mouth.

Ugh, DD does this too….I am constantly saying “fingers out of your mouth!!!”…she just does it when she’s not paying attention, just sticks them in there. I try to remind her how many germs are on her hands, etc….but she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it.

She also likes to stick the bottom of her hair in her mouth and I freak about that too….nasty! Though she goes in spurts with this, won’t do it for months, then will do it for a stretch.
