How do I get my hair to stop turning orangey?
Whenever I dye my hair, in a few weeks it turns back to this orangey color, and instead of just getting my roots done, I have to re dye all of it. I want to make it all really dark, and put a lot of highlights in, but I am scared that its just going to get orange again. HELP!
you can kinda see what I am talking about in this pic

Re: How do I get my hair to stop turning orangey?
sometimes when u have super dark hair underneath i notice it gets brassy quick...
some things i can suggest/ask...are they glossing ur hair after they dye it?
is this a good salon ur going to, b/c maybe they are not leaving the dye in long enuff to get the gold color...there is a thin time frame from it being orangy gold to blonde to white and only a great colorist will know when the cooked hair is good to go :)

do you get a toner? i only highlight once a yr but ALWAYS get a toner. if i don't, then it gets brassy sooner. i also use shimmering lights shampoo a few times a months. BTW - i have dirty blonde hair with a good amount of yellow undertones.

I have been to a few different places, and it always ends up the same. I feel like I have cursed hair

Not really out in the sun often at all. I have no idea what my natural color is, I started dying it before I was even in hs

I have this problem too anytime I try to go lighter. I don't have the patience anymore but I used to do a double process and that worked.

i was just thinking that if you have grey hair, it is harder for the color to take... that might be why. but i can't think of any other reason, sorry

Re: How do I get my hair to stop turning orangey?
using a toner will definitely help. Either ask your salon, or you can go to Sally Beauty supply and pick up a bottle (you mix it as you would regular hair dye) and just get one that has a blue base to off-set the orange tone.
Also, there are certain brands that carry brass reducing colors... this too will help but at a salon you rarely know what you are getting but its worth asking. A colorist should be able to point you in the right direction and make sure that you are completely satisfied with the results (even weeks later)

did you have this problem before getting pregnant? Could it be the hormones?

Re: How do I get my hair to stop turning orangey?
My colorist once told me that ash colors take out red/orange. Try and ash brown or ash blonde. Or ask about mixing an ash with another color.
