How do I know something is legit on ebay?

My BIL wants Lacoste shirts for xmas and because we hope to buy him a bunch and I refuse to pay retail, I'm headed to ebay. But how do I know they are legit and authentic shirts? Is it just a crapshoot?

if they have a good rating and have sold others before, I would 'assume' it was safe

I don't believe there is an official way to find out if its real. But there feedback and rating is a good indicator that they are real. I find sometimes its not worth buying b/c some sellers charge way to much in shipping, that it deficits the purpose of buying on there. But sometimes its not.

You can also email the seller and double check. I just did this with a seller. Not if it was real, but about questions I had about the item. He has great feedback and has sold a ton. He never responded to me! Well, that just shows he could care less and I won't buy anything from him. It was legit questions that his ad does not cover. the item was $200 too!

I agree with other responses and I would def do what the PP did if you want to be 100% sure. Email the person. I recently wanted to buy my DD some boots on ebay and it was a reputable seller but her listing didn't say if they were leather or man-made material. As a seller, I would put that in my listing so I emailed her to check so I would not end up with something that I wasn't expecting. Sometimes it's an oversight and sometimes someone tries to skate by with a "my listing never said _____". Usually a good rep with lots of good feedback is enough but always good to check, esp with higher priced items.

DON'T DO IT! I tried ordering about 5 Lacoste shirts on ebay, from sellers who ALL had great feedback. They weren't even good fakes! The legit ones on ebay are as expensive as in stores.

The problem is that when I returned the shirts, the sellers refunded my money, so it is difficult to give a negative rating since they refunded no questions asked. Had they fought the return, I would have given a negative rating.
