How do I sharpen my knives?

I have that stick that came with my knife block set. How exactly do I use it?
I know Im supposed to run the knives against it but if anyone could explain, in great detail, how I do that, that would be GREAT.

I'm sure if I can explain it right but here goes. You have to slide the knife blade on an angle along side the sharpener. You alternate each side of the blade.

I remember when I was a kid (80's)there was a guy that used to come by in a truck who would sharpen knives. It was really funny he had a Good Humor style truck and would ring a bell & everyone on the block would come out with knives & scissors.

I swear I'm not making this up. Did anyone else have this.?

Yes, the man in the really really old truck still comes around. He lives in Bellmore. He told my mom that she can call him and he will come, but he never calls her back I really need to sharpen my knives as well. The sharpener just isn't cutting it anymroe.

The steel that comes with your knifes is actually for honing--not sharpening. You are supposed to hone frequently.

Sharpening you can do less frequently. You can do it yourself with a sharpening stone or electric sharpener or you can bringthem to a store.

(We had a guy in a truck in Bethpage , but I haven't seen one in years!)

There is a store by me (Chef Central) that does this, I'm not sure here on LI you can get it done.

he still comes around in certain neighborhoods. When I lived in Massapequa, he would come around about once a month!!
