How do I tell her?

My coworker again is wearing her beach cover up to work.

White spaghetti straps, tube top dress.

I wear stuff like this to the pool.

yeah, I agree and she thinks I'm her friend. I'm not. I have to work with her.

But no one says anything to her.

She is the only one who dresses that way.

Oh I agree. I just think judgment goes out the window.

and Barbara, I don't manage her but they want me to mentor her and a few other assistants.

I don't think they will like me very much. There is a dress code and a new one is being rolled out but hasn't come out yet. I was waiting for that to do the trick but it hasn't been published yet.

her boss has hinted to her but she is not that bright.

Re: How do I tell her?

I think you should just pull her aside and remind her in a nice way----say you wanted to tell her before one of the bosses write her up for it.

Re: How do I tell her?

Honestly, why care? I wouldn't waste my energy worrying about what somebody else wears. If she looks inappropriate, it's her own problem... why even do anything about it? I work with plenty of people who dress inappropriately for work. If you were her manager, that would be one thing & you'd have to say something... but if she's just a coworker, why get involved?

because people come over to stare..they pass her desk to look at her. This may be a serious HR issue soon.

I think you have two options:

1- tell her directly. Either as a friend, or as a mentor if that is what they want you to be. You could use the new guidelines when they come out as a reason & then address comments to all of the people you mentor & tell them that in your experience it is best to stick within the guidelines.
So int his case it would be more advice, than a reprimand, since you are not her boss.

2- tell your manager that it makes you uncomfortable, but that you didn't say anything because it is not your place to tell her she is breaking the rules

She already thinks I dress too conservative since I came from our headquarter building. I don't wear suits. I just think that a beach dress is not work attire.

There are a few others that need an intervention. T-shirt logo guy.

Stay out of it. Have her boss do it or HR.

If a grown woman cannot see that a beach cover up is inappropriate, what is there to say?

Trying to find out when it's coming out. My boss is the CIO and she is working with her boss to get it out. There was going to be a relaxed dress code for summer but I know it didn't include spaghetti straps and plunging necklines. It also doesn't include flip flops.

That's pretty much my point. Clueless and not too bright. She works for all men and they are all too scared to say something.

I think as a mentor, this might be a good idea. My first job out of college had casual fridays and I remember one girl wearing shorts and I thought - great! I can wear shorts?! Hindsight, I think about how unprofessional that would have been, but if one person does it, it could start a downward spiral.

On the otherhand, I'm not good with confrontation, so I wouldn't say anything until the new dresscode comes out.

Re: How do I tell her?

Now my female boss knows.

She was appalled.

The rest is out of my hands. I asked her to leave me out of it. I have to work with her very closely. They are making me work with her on things and it's not a partnership. It's me telling her what to do..she doesn't have the experience.

I didn't know I was teaching her how to do her job..I didn't sign up for that.

mentoring for the firm is not teaching someone how to do their job.

btw--she's 41.

it does when there is a parade of male co-workers coming by all day. iI sit right next to her and it's distracting. We sit right on top of each other practically.

As her "mentor", I think you should say something, but not in a heavy-handed kind of way. Maybe show her the policy that's already in place and ask her if she thinks her wardrobe is appropriate/fits within the policy.

Ugh. I feel your pain. This is exactly why I gave up my previous supervisory positions. I was so sick of being told I had to do other staff's work or take the fall for them because of their cluelessness in life.

She's 41? It sounded like you were describing a new college grad!
