How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
Isn't that a form of discrimination?
What if I can't get approved for their credit card?
What if I don't believe in paying by credit?
Why isn't my purchase "good enough" on it's own, without using the store credit card, too?
Yes, I know they want to charge me interest...but me using their card is no guarantee that they will be able to earn extra money off me in finance charges...

It really bothers me because the majority of time I can't even get approved because of my credit and I think they lose lots of customers this way.

I don't have a problem with it, its another way for the store to make money- they are betting on making lots off $$ of the interest on the card. They wouldn't make anything extra if you paid by another means.

Just playing devil's advocate...if they want to make "extra" why not just build that into the price of the item? Or, just not offer a discount at all??

It works in my favor at Macy's!
That's the only store card I have, b/c it's almost always cardholder appreciation day!

I agree with ST and the reason they offer the discount is so you'll buy there as opposed to somewhere else.
Think of it this way - if you buy there and don't get a discount but pay with cash or a regular CC, then they get full price for the item. If you buy there, get the discount using their CC then odds are you won't pay the balance in full (most people don't) so they make up the money twofold by you spending with them as opposed to somewhere else.
It's a win/win situation for the retailer.

I would equate it to something similar as to not taking competitor's coupons. It's a discount, but only by using their coupons. Many stores also have discount cards (not credit cards, just store cards that give you a discount). It's along the same lines. I can't go to Stop&Shop and say "But I have a Waldbaums discount card, why can't I get a discount with that?"

Because I am sure they are makiing a heck of a lot more on the interest of the card than they are on the 10% off they are giving you. Its a way to get people to spend money - but if the card is not paid off right away, then the company is raking in the money on the interest.

I find it annoying. There is one store in particular that is notorious for doing this. DH has the cc for this store so I always need to shop with him. I really don't need another cc myself!

We have this with the Target card (I use it and pay off the balance each month) but it's DH's card and since he doesn't do too much shopping, I have taken possession of the card

But those cards don't have any bearing on your credit score OR method of payment. All you have to do is walk in and say "I want the discount card, too" and they'll hand it right over to you.

Discrimination? Hardly.
Discimination has to be against a protected class. Those with poor credit or who don't want to use credit cards are not a protected class.
Annoying? Most definitely. I refuse to open a million credit cards just to save 10%. I have NO store CCs and I prefer to keep it that way. (I have other CCs, but pay those off every month. I don't want dozens of revolving accounts open in my name for the possibility of sometimes saving $$) I'll just take my business elsewhere or shop online.

Yeah...I don't think that the grocery store card theory applies to this question. Retail stores do this discount/CC thing to get you to spend money at their store and put it on your store CC which they are collecting the interest on. If everyone paid the cards off in full each month, they probably wouldn't have these offers.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
I don't think it's a form of dicrimination since it's a choice to apply, not apply, managing credit, etc.
I don't mind it when it includes special sales or discounts - it's to give back for loyalty and can be seen as a volume discount that is given over time.
I liked it when Macy's used to give cardholders automatic discounts and sales prices without using a coupon - it was convenient to use the card but were coupons in the newspaper if you didn't have their charge. But the last set of coupons I recieved required the coupon and use of the charge card.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?

No, I don't believe so. It's more of an incentive to shop there and it's a way for the store to make more money off their customers with the interest charges. That is unless you pay off your balances in full. Then it's just a winning situation for the customer.
What if I can't get approved for their credit card?
Then you pay by some other means and don't get their discount. Usually it's not a huge discount, at best 10% so it doesn't work out to be all that much unless you're spending a lot of money.
What if I don't believe in paying by credit?
Then you would pay with cash.
Why isn't my purchase "good enough" on it's own, without using the store credit card, too?
It's not that your purchase isn't "good enough", it's just that the credit card thing is a special promotion and if you you wish to take part in it, you reap the benefit. They're not saying you can't purchase the items you want to get. You just won't qualify for the promotion. It's like saying I want this shirt for a discount b/c those other (completely different) shirts are on sale. One has nothing to do with the other.
Yes, I know they want to charge me interest...but me using their card is no guarantee that they will be able to earn extra money off me in finance charges...
It's the chance they are willing to take b/c 9 out of 10 times, they're going to make money off of the customer.

Maybe I'm blurring the lines here, but I am not permitted to make a hiring decision based on someone's credit...
But, Store A is allowed to withhold a discount from someone who can't open a credit card due to bad credit...

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
I find nothing wrong with this. It's an advantage and benefit to having their card. It's like AMEX, they offer you all of these pre-sale opportunities but if you don't have the card you can't take advantage... I'm fine with that.... even if I can't qualify for the card.

Right. They have the right to protect themselves finanically. Plus, it's not like they aren't letting you buy the product. You (the collective you, not YOU specifically) just won't get the discount.
To use your hiring analogy...
You can't base your hiring decision on someone's credit, but you (or the company) can determine what their salary is.

I have no problem with it. I only have 2 store cards and the only reason I opened them is to get the discounts since I shop there fairly frequently.
I also see the discounts as a small reward for opening the card there.

I hate this policy. I avoid Macy's for this exact reason. It suckks that they are forcing you to have their card if you want the same prices as other people.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
I don't think it's discriminatory but it can be a pain in the arse if you frequent more than a handful of stores that do this.
Personally, I like to have just one or two major credit cards to manage expenses - these store cards throw my plan off but then again it's my choice to decide how to handle it.
For the reason of exclusive discounts, I have a GAP card so I can take advantage of promotions and more coupons but again I limit my store cards to only the ones I really benefit from.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
I find it annoying that I can spend SOOO much money in a store yet, only if I get their CC will I get a discount. So in theory, I could be a much bigger customer than someone with their CC who spends per year in their store a lot less than me.
While it does annoy me, I am still not getting their CC.
Having too many CC goes against your credit and I am not lured by the 10% off.
ETA: I think customers should have a "customer card" just like at the grocery store. They could check your ID to make sure it's you each time you do a purchase (so you don't send all your friends under your name!). Then give you a discount based on the amount of business you do with them.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
I don't like this practice and sometimes it drives my business away. If I do not have the card and really don't want it, I may just shop elsewhere instead of paying extra. I don't want to open a card for every store I shop in.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
its to get them to use their CC and hope you will charge more stuff - or not payoff what you originally charge - and then they get 21% interest, which is usually what the store cards regular rate is.
