Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
IMO, def NOT discrimination. the store can set any rules they like.
Macy's and Kohl's do this a LOT! those are the only 2 stores I have a CC with - aside from Circuit City. which brings me to another point. the reason we have a circuit city CC is to take advantage when they run a ___ month same as cash promo. I think it's the same concept as running a sale using the store's CC.
nothing wrong with it. again, JMO

NY & Company and even the Gap does the same thing. It's to get you to charge and spend more money it has nothing to do with your credit, even though thats the only way to get it. It's all about boosting their profit b/c they presume you won't pay your bill in full or charge up a storm with all the "discounts" you get.
I open them around Christmastime, pay the bill in full, and close the account in March

I never thought of it as discrimination. I think of it as more of an incentive and a reward for their loyal customers. I love that Macy's does it. I find it very helpful.

I use my Macy's card alot because of this incentive but you can use it and then make a payment right there with cash or check. That way you get your percentage off and you don't pay interest.

Discrimination? Hardly.
Discimination has to be against a protected class. Those with poor credit or who don't want to use credit cards are not a protected class.
Maybe I'm blurring the lines here, but I am not permitted to make a hiring decision based on someone's credit...
But, Store A is allowed to withhold a discount from someone who can't open a credit card due to bad credit...
You're also framing the question incorrectly. The store is not withholding a discount from someone who doesn't have good enough credit to open the credit card account. They are offering an additional incentive to people who do open the credit cards.
You aren't entitled to a discount. It's a promotion for the credit card, not the item. Additional discounts for using the credit card are likewise rewards for the credit card, not withholding some mythical "deserved" discount from people without the cards.
And no, for these purposes, "people with bad credit" is not a protected class.

I framed the question this way because they are, in effect, withholding a discount from someone who doesn't have good enough credit to open their credit card account.
If someone were to go through the process of applying, only to be rejected, the store wouldn't say "okay, well you tried, so here's the discount anyway." They would say "Sorry, you have to use the credit card to get this discount."

just like it's an incentive at a country club to play golf on a private course. it's not discrimination, it's a perk. but not everyone can afford to join a country club.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
Perhaps if you cannot get credit for a store credit card you shouldn't be worrying about some silly discount ... concentrating on lowering your debt, not adding to it would be a better use of your time, no? This seems like a silly argument to have ... having someone co-sign for a store credit card (at 24%++ I am sure) because your credit is so bad just to get a 20% discount once every few months seems a bit backwards and would only make your debt issues worse.

My point is kind of different. Basically, what I'm trying to say is:
You and I are both buying the same item from the same store. I get to save 10% because I have great credit and use my store card. Let's say your credit sux, so you end up paying more for the same item. But, that's okay.
Let's say I interview you and another similarly experienced/educated applicant. I hire that person because they have better credit than you, so I deem that person to be more responsible than you. Now I just discriminated against you.

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
I didnt read the whole post, but I refuse to open up cards just to get a discount.
Many times, cashiers give the discount without using the card.
just this weekend, my MIL had a nice cashier who did this for her at Kohls. It happened to me numerous times at Macys. THey offer before I even have a clue that its !5% off day.
Im sure it depends on the store and how strict the mgmt is.
I hate silly rules that make no sense. Give me the damn discount and get over it.

Employment and 10% off at Macys are two different things. Out of curiosity, do you have any white papers that it's technically discrimination not to use a credit score in the hiring process? I'm honestly curious. To get your bar license, they pull your credit report. I'm not a specialist in employment law, though.
When I was a law student, I got student discounts at TONS of places. Are those places withholding these discounts from non-students? Wouldn't that, too, be discrimination under your definition? What if people aren't smart enough to get into college or can't afford to go?
I get discounts for being a AAA member, too. Is that discrimination? What if you don't have a car or can't afford AAA membership?
I also get discounts for being members of various bar associations. Is that discrimination against non-lawyers?
I don't see it as withholding anything from anyone. I see it as a reward for holding their credit card. As with many other things in life, if you don't qualify for the reward, then you don't get it. I don't think that's necessarily discrimnation.
My credit is perfectly fine and I choose not to get these credit cards for many reasons... Granted, it's personal choice and not circumstance preventing me from getting one... but not everyone with great credit is getting a big discount at every store.

Actually, YES, I do think that would be discriminatory.
I'll FM you what I have with regard to credit scores/hiring decisions.
I just saw your edit- I guess I think AAA is different because it's something ANYONE (to my knowledge) can join...right? AAA isn't going to run your credit or a background check or anything else on you, are they?

Re: How do we feel about stores that only give a discount if THEIR credit card is used?
The discount is an incentive to using the credit card...no more, no less. The theory behind the credit card is that you won't pay it off within the 30 day cycle, so therefore, on the majority of customers the company is still getting their full price.
Only the people who pay their bills in full each month actually make out on the deal, but a majority of people won't.
Some people opt not to take them up on their incentive at all. They don't deserve a reward for that choice.

Well, technically, it's NOT discriminatory because, once again, non-students are not a protected class.
I'm very interested to see what you have about credit scoring and hiring. I'm sincerely curious about it! Thanks for offering to share.
