How do you choose a 529 plan?
And what's the difference vs performance, etc.? I thought it was just an account to put away money tax free for college?

Not easy- I let my DH do it. It really just an account that you can save tax free but MUST be used towards some type of education. It is hard to pick which one though.

The most important thing is usually choosing the plan that your state offers. If your state offers tax benefits, it will only be for their sponsored plan. Then, I would put the money into an age based account. Let the money managers worry about lessening risk as your child gets older and needs to take less risk. If you are in NYS, Vanguard or Columbia.
