How do you deal with insensitive people?

I just heard someone say (not to me) that perhaps infertility is "god's way of telling you that you should adopt." She also says it's selfish to try IVF and NOT adopt. Selfish? Who are these people and why do they work in my office?!?! And also how she thinks it's wrong that insurance partially covers IVF since IVF is an "elective procedure."

Now if she had said this to me, I would say that insurance covers a lot of stuff that I would never need, and I am grateful not resentful.

No one at work knows my situation and I wouldn't tell them.

I think you did good, I would not have been able to not say anything to them.

People can easily say stuff like that, but guess what...its not our job to save the world and you actually don't have to have IF problems to adopt. What is stopping them from adopting! Not to mention that "just adopt" is not as easy as it actually sounds. Its very expensive and it takes years, people come into your home and interrogate your personal and financial life.

It gets me so mad when people are small minded and have things easier than us. But, such is the way of the world. What can you do? People will think what they think. Its not our job to change them either.

Oh wanted to add - Viagra isn't medically necessary either!!!

I'd say, "I hope the insurance covers pills to help people not be b!tches, bc u def need that prescription!"

I'd also glare at her and give her dirty looks every time I saw her for the rest of my life.

I literally would have lost my mind if i heard someone say that. i definitely give you credit for not saying anything!

the woman clearly has no idea what she is talking about and she sounds like an ignorant moron.

i agree with the PP that i would give her dirty looks forever. ugh how disgusting!

i honestly don't think people have any clue what heartache people have to go through with IF and how scary the whole process is. what an insanely selfish thing to say!

I try to chaulk it up to people being ignorant. My views on IF and IVF were so much different 10 years ago, before I knew anything about it or walked a mile in those shoes.
