I'm usually against it because the whole idea brings back memories of my sister taking carte blanche rights to everything in my closet. I had new clothes that she would lose or ruin before I wore them. Don't even get me started on the smell of her perfume that never seemed to wash out!

The one thing I would want to loan out more often is dresses. I wish that some of my special occasion dresses would get more use but most of my friends are either thinner than I am, taller than I am or both! On the flip side, I could buy less dresses if we were all the same size and could swap.

You must have grown up with my sister...she was famous for taking crap that hadn't even been worn and losing it/lending it/destroying it.

There is NO WAY I would have lent her the coat. I would have come up with some excuse (it was at the cleaners, etc.).

If someone asks, I'm usually happy to lend them anything they want. I'm usually asking if they want anything else! Chat Icon

The only things I would be hesitant to lend would be items that belonged to my grandmother or mother (mostly accessories). Anything I have ever bought, I'd be happy to lend out.

I went through this for years with my sister...it's was the reason why I moved in with my DH (boyfriend then.) He got tired of my b*tchin' and said "Ok...just pack up your things and bring them to the cottage." Chat Icon

I was always happy to lend things to my sister when she asked even knowing it might get ruined, but when she just took things and destroyed them...that ****** me off! (She just never valued her belongings the way I did/do, still doesn't.)

Re: How do you feel about lending your clothes to someone?

I only loan out clothes to my sisters. I pretty much let them borrow whatever they want - clothes, jewelry, whatever. But that's because I know that they'll get it back to me asap. (and i don't ask to borrow clothes from anybody except my sisters as well).

i have however needed to cut my younger sister off though. lol. When we still lived together, she used to take my clothes all the time and I'd never find them again. Weeks later it would be buried under a pile of dirty clothes on her floor and i'd get so mad. I like to take care of my things, so unless i REALLY trust you to also take care of them, then you will not have permission to borrow. lol.

Just like to add - i totally get you not wanting to let your neighbor borrow your coat, especially since it was expensive. I probably would have lied and said that I'd have to look for it and then never get back to her. And if she called again, I'd maybe say that i couldn't find it. lol. (that way if she ever sees me in it again, I can be like "oh yeah, i just found it!" lol) I'm so mean Chat Icon

I would have loaned it – esp since she saw you wear it. If she is your neighbor it’s not like you can’t go over to her house and knock on the door and ask for it back..I guess since it was expensive I would just be nervous it would get stained or something like that.

Re: How do you feel about lending your clothes to someone?

I put a deadbolt lock on my closet when I lived at home to stop my sister's from stealing my clothes. So no, I don't like lending clothes.

I was a little taken aback by my neighbor (who is also a friend) this morning.

She called to see if I had a dressy coat she could borrow to wear today to 2 communions or confirmations she had to go to. Mind you I'm 5'8" and she's about 5'1". The only coat I could think of was a nice trench/raincoat I bought last year that I have only worn about 2 or 3 times - I wear it with dresses when we go out - and I happened to have worn it to her daughter's Sweet 16 last month. I really didn't want to lend it out because I spent a good amount of money on it and it's like brand new.

So, I was like no - I don't think I have one that would fit you. And she was like what about the one you wore to my daughter's party?? That one would be good.

I just thought the whole thing was a little pushy and nervy. I don't like lending out clothes because they never come back the same - and this is like brand new and it was also a lot of money.

I ended up lending it to her because she really caught me off guard and I just didn't know what to say. What would you have done?

i wouldnt have been comfortable with this either. i think its really strange that she asked, esp after you said you dont have anything to lend her!!!!

I lend stuff all the time, however it definitely depends on the person.
