Re: How do you feel about Roosevelt Field? Do you feel safe going there?
Nope, I don't feel safe there.
Partially because I was raised on the north shore of Suffolk county my whole life and I'm just not familiar with the area....but partially because its Sketchville.
Rich used to work in Elmont. I was there with him one night - we were meeting other teachers and their spouses in the parking lot of the school, and then going for dinner. We were first to arrive in the lot, and we were there for no more than 5 minutes when we heard GUNSHOTS AND SCREAMING. We got right back onto Jericho and went home.
I am not a fan of that general area at all - yes, that's judgmental of me - I don't care.

I feel safe there...it's terrible but people can get attacked anywhere...regardless where it is located.
The only reason why i do try to avoid RF is because it gets way to crowded now.

I agree. I also dont go to RF as often because its not convenient for me. But if it was, I have no problem going there.

Re: How do you feel about Roosevelt Field? Do you feel safe going there?
Gosh, aside from the incident yesterday...I have never thought about being afraid to go to the mall alone. I just don't live my life that way...I was single for a while with no DH and friends are busy with kids and such...would that mean I couldn't go to the mall ever?? I live in manahatten...is it scary that I walk a few blocks alone at 11pm or midnight in my neighborhood? Where do we draw the line?
I guess everyone has to do what's best for themself.

I have never had a problem in RF. I've worked there and have gone by myself at night. And I agree, this kind of thing can happen anywhere and you should be aware of your surroundings.

Well you should not be concerned with the area around roosevelt field - it is not anywhere near elmont. RF is near Garden City which is a very nice area. The problems with RF are that it attracts a lot of people from all over with the large bus stop and like any mall none are particularly safe.

Yeah. Garden City is a beautiful, expensive place to live. And Elmont isn't so bad.
I can see what you are saying though. I am formally a North Shore, Nassau county girl and most places I don't recognize in Suffolk scare the hell out of me.

What does Elmont have to do with RF?
I go to Roosevelt Field ALL THE TIME! I feel completely safe there and will continue to go. It's in a good area and honestly crime happens everywhere.

Re: How do you feel about Roosevelt Field? Do you feel safe going there?
I didn't know what happened there today but I was reading this thread going yeah, why wouldn't I feel safe there???
After I read what happened...um..yeah, I still feel safe there. That can happen anywhere. It certainly makes me be more cautious, but doesn't make me feel any less safe at RF.
ETA: I'm actually a little surprised by the people who said they won't go there alone...
Do you call someone up and ask them to go with you when you specifically need to go there or do you just avoid going to that particular mall altogether?

Re: How do you feel about Roosevelt Field? Do you feel safe going there?
I grew up in Garden City so I've always felt comfortable there. However, I do not feel comfortable in parking lots in general, any where, at night or in the dark.

Thank you = I'm glad you see what I meant. I'm never comfortable in places I'm not used to - that includes RF, Riverhead, Boston, what have you.

I don't like it because it is crowded.
I don't feel safe in the Bay Shore mall, but I end up going there out of convenience at times. I usually go to Smithaven, where I feel safe, though I try to avoid going alone at night because gangs do hang out there.

agree on all counts although the security at Smith Haven is better than many other malls I've been to

While RF is near Garden City-- lets not forget that it is also near HEMPSTEAD... which is, well, it's Hempstead. They don't tell students at Hofstra "DON'T TURN LEFT" for nothing!

I never felt safe going there, even in daylight. I would rather spend extra $$$ and shop at the Americana or Wheatley Plaza.

I always felt safe there- I got almost every where alone
but I might go back to valet parking- it's free at Bloomies and Nordstrom with your card-
Not anymore with Nordstrom
I make sure to be aware of my surroundings whether I am in RF, driving home through Hempstead (which there are ALWAYS undesireable neighborhoods right next to affluent ones), or upstate at my parents house.
It's about using your head and making wise decisions. Where there's a large group of people and large parking lots, there will be those who prey on the not so smart.
It's a scary world EVERYWHERE, just because you hear of this incident doesn't mean you shouldn't ever go there again, just be more alert.
