Xavier sleeps ALL day long and is up all night long. He's still sleeping now. No matter what I do he falls back asleep. I know it's impossible for a newborn to sleep all night...i'm just looking for ideas on how to begin the switch.

We tried keeping him up during the day, but good luck with that! We left on all the lights during the day, played TV, made noise, made it dark at night and very quiet, only kept him in the dark to change/feed him at night, but in the end, it just took time. It's all a blur but I want to say by 4-5 weeks he was on track. Chat Icon

Ugh...that's what I figured. It's so hard to be awake all day for Rylan and all night for Xavier. I guess welcome to motherhood...lol.

With Elizabeth, I didn't let her sleep for more than 3 hours at a time during the day. Also, it helps if you take them outside. I know the weather is crappy but a bit of sunlight helps (or so I've read).

I really do try to keep him up...nothing works!!!! As soon as it warms up a bit i'll try taking him outside. He even sleeps through Rylan playing all day!!

it took DS about 3-4 weeks to get into the swing of things. I kept things very normal in the day. I didnt let it get too quiet or dark. At night I'd only have 1 little light on and kept it very dark and quiet. This seemed to help.

This is exactly what we've been doing too. Its slowly getting a little bit better. I keep him in the living room bassinet all day with the tv and people and light and noise. At night we try to keep it sooo quiet. I'm not sure if thats helping though. He's only going to be 4 weeks on Monday so I'll give it a few more weeks. I also started walking with him this week everyday, except today!

I woke ds every three hrs to feed him no matter what. By no time, he was a night time sleeper bc that was the time we didn't wake him.

Re: How do you get a newborn to switch their days and nights?

I would move the bassinet into the living room during the day. All the window blinds would be open and the tv was on. I would have Xavier sleep this way for the first few weeks during the day. Once he started STTN 5-6 hours, I left the bassinet in our bedroom and he would nap in there or bouncy, swing or on me. At night I dim the lights in the house. He is fed practically in the dark. Now he naps wherever whether its noisy or not. But he is a power napper and so unpredictable sometimes. At least he is sleeping 10 hours at night so I'm not complaining. Chat Icon

ITA, plus I only swaddle DS with the miracle blanket at around 11pm. I wont put him in it during the day.
