Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
If your newborn had their days and nights mixed up, how long did it take them to get adjusted?
Erin sleeps WONDERFULLY during the day- will go for 4 hours without asking to eat, and then will go directly back to sleep. At night is a different story. She is awake after most feedings and you have to rock her to sleep for a while. I try to stimulate her as much as possible during the day and when she is awake, keep her up as much as possible too, and it is getting better, but DH is going back to work tomorrow so its just me at night starting tonight and I am already exhausted.

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
first off congrats on your lil girl! she is beautiful! my DD had this problem and I thought it was going to last for eternity..she finally straightened herself by 10 weeks..but it did feel like forever and I did feel like I was going to lose it at any moment..but hang it there and it will pass..
nothing I could do during the day to keep her awake either, it was so frustrating..

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
Congrats on the baby!! DD was confused also and it worked itself out and she was fine around 6 weeks. She would wake up to eat and go right back to sleep.
Those first few weeks are really hard. I remember getting NO sleep because by the time I would fall asleep, it would be time for her to eat again. It gets better, hang in there

Congrats on your beautiful daughter. Gracelyn just figured out her nights/days just about 6 weeks. She's sleeping for a 6 hour stretch at night now. Good luck!

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
Lily had that problem right at the beginning and it was AWFUL!! Around 3 weeks, I couldn't take it anymore...so I started waking her every 3 hours to eat. I would wake her about 15 minutes before she was due to eat, play with her a little and then give her a bottle. I'd keep her up for as long as I could after the bottle and then she'd go back to sleep. At night, I made sure the room was dark and quiet after her last bottle, so that she could tell there was a difference. It worked itself out by 4 weeks, and she's been sleeping through the night until 8am regularly since 6 weeks! Hang in there !

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
Her PED. didn't want her eating less than every three hours during the day, so I would wake her for feedings.
At night when she woke to eat, I kept the nighttime routine as UNstimulating as possible. No talking to her, no eye contact. I used a taplight at her changing table and next to the glider rather than turning on all the lights. By 3 weeks she was going right back to sleep after she nursed.

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
i dont remember how long, honestly. but what we did that helped was create distinct DAY and NIGHT modes.... DAY: noisy, bright, television on, people talking, etc.... NIGHT: very low TV volume, dim lighting, quiet.... it was our ped's recommendation and I think it did help his little body clock reset.

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
It took my second until about 3-4 weeks to get it right.

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
DD definitely had this problem too. Plus, her witching hour was from 3-4am, so it was tons of fun, to say the least. She just automatically kind of switched to the proper days/nights, I'd say around maybe 6 weeks. Now, just to reinforce nighttime, at her last feeding around 8 or 9pm, we shut the lights/tv/everything off and then put her into bed when she's done.
But your little one is so small and will hopefully just switch to the proper times soon!

Re: Newborn question re: nights and days being mixed up
Thanks everyone for your responses. Ryan was the BEST sleeper from day 1 so I was completely spoiled by him. I hope this doesn't last long- mommy needs her sleep too!!
