how do you girls feel about...
a home birth? I have had a lot of days off these past two weeks because the kids I watch have had field day, preschool graduation, etc. Being very pregnant, I'm not complaining lol but I have had a lot of time to watch a Baby Story and for those of you who are avid watchers, there are a lot of home births.
I'm not saying that I am judging these women, besides the "what if" concerns that I would have (emergency c section due to cord wrapped around the neck, dropped heart rate, etc) I'm not sure how I'd feel about it.
How do you feel?

What other people do is their business - I want a disinfected hospital, an MD and drugs - I also want every single medical advancement known to man available to me .........I am not at all 'earthy' or 'natural' and I have no qualms admitting to it -

Umm exactly. I want every single pain relief option available to me. I see no reason to have to suffer that kind of pain in this day and age. Not to mention the fact that God Forbid something were to go wrong with me or the baby I would want to know that help was RIGHT there. I would never forgive myself if something happened to the baby that could have been fixed in the hospital- all because I wanted a home birth. I hear too many horror stories- even on here- of babies coming out not breathing etc. WAY too scary.

While I REALLY want to try for a drug free labor, that has to do with ME and what *I* can handle. I don't want my baby to suffer for ONE EXTRA SECOND if some kind of monitoring could easily detect distress.

Had I attempted a home birth, both Abby and I wouldn't be here and I live less than 2 miles from the hospital I delivered in. I'd NEVER do it.

What she said. As a BTDT I was in labor for a long time before my epidural. I don't think I would have been able to push if I didn't get it. I was too tired. Plus who wants all that clean-up at home.

oh yeah the cleanup! my mom told me that back in italy the midwife would take care of all of that, and then come by for 3 or 4 days to check on the baby but also to help you clean yourself up if you needed the help
but i doubt that is in their job description these days LOL

Re: how do you girls feel about...
I wouldn't be here either if I had attempted a home birth with DS.
I had a post delivery hemorrhage and they had to shoot me up with all sorts of drugs to make the bleeding stop.
They were --this close-- to taking me into emergency surgery too, but thankfully the bleeding subsided.
Not for me. Wouldn't consider it for one second.

Re: how do you girls feel about...
I would actually consider it if my husband wasnt so against it. So I will be having my baby at a hospital but I do want to do it drug free! Our bodies were made to have babies its something woman do every day all the time! I think its wonderful if people choose to do it. Not that Im saying there is anything wrong with being in a hospital and having drugs but for me I want to most natural drug free birth I can have for me and my babies!

Re: how do you girls feel about...
Its not for me, but I can see why others want to do it. I would be way to terrified something would go wrong, I want there to be experienced doctors and advanced equipment when I deliver, and all the drugs in the world if I need them.

Re: how do you girls feel about...
I would love to have one, IF they could give you epidurals at home! Several of my friends have had them and their other kids slept right through it! I would love to give birth and be right at home in my own bed. We are offered home births here and they are very popular and safe. The midwives are very capable and in case of an emergency, we are close enough to several hospitals. Here we have a midwives who come to visit you every 2-3 days for up to 28 days. I had a wonderful relationship with the community midwife who came to look after me when I had my little girl in March.

Zero interest in it. I want to go to the hospital, be surrounded by medical devices there to assist with unexpected situations and a doc with epidural in hand. Plus, I like the free formula and diapers for two days.

Re: how do you girls feel about...
I was considering one for this baby - a CNM assisted home birth - but DH said OB/hospital.
We compromised with CNM at hospital. I'm fine with that. I wanted my master bed and bath to be finished before I gave birth and it's not even started yet. I don't want baby to born in the sad shape it's in now.

I think it is a beautiful thing, if you are brave enough to do it more power to you!!!! I wish I had the courage but I am a wuss. Plus having a vbac at home would be a little scary because of all the things that can happen. Nohting wrong with having a home birth if that is what you prefer. I admire the courage of the person who is willing to try it!

Re: how do you girls feel about...
i am hoping for a homebirth!
i know a lot of women on here probably think it is a crazy idea and honestly i did too... before i decided to get more info on it. the more i learned, the more i leaned towards homebirth. if all goes well, i will have one.
also, i know a lot of people worry about the dangers of birthing at home ... there have been lots of studies on the safety of homebirth and it has been proven to be just as safe as hospital birth. if you need to go to the hospital for something the midwife can't handle, then you go. these problems tend to come up gradually and you have time to get to the hospital. (as long as you don't live to far.... you shouldn't live more than 20-30 min. from a hospital if you are doing homebirth). also, midwives bring a lot of equipment and things with them that they might need in case of an emergency... like oxygen, or drugs to stop a hemmorage, etc.
every woman has to birth in whatever way is most comfortable to her, so whether hospital or homebirth, i think it really depends on what the mom wants to do/can do. for me, i think it will be homebirth!

Just have to say your chances of getting a staph infection, MRSA or C-diff are much higher at a hospital, than at home. This is actually a big argument in favor of home-births.
I know several people who have come home from different hospitals with staph and C-diff infections after giving birth (these were both C-sections, though) -- and a friend's sisters baby got a staph infection at her hospital after she was born (normal vaginal birth). Yuck! Not as sterile as you would think!

Re: how do you girls feel about...
It's not for me, but with a well trained mid-wife, a home birth is just as safe as a hospital birth. I was VERY skeptical....and was of the you are a crazy person if you want one, mind set, but I think it's the right choice for some people.
