How do you handle temper tantrums of a 12 month old???
My DD has become a little diva, to say it nicely. All of the sudden she has such an attitude. Not all of the time. It's kind of like Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde. What is the best way to handle??
Do I just let her continue her fit until she's over it?
I don't want her to become one of those kids that always gets what they want all of the time.

Oh, boy. I wish I knew. DS is 20 months old and he is getting REALLY bad with his temper tantrums. I usually try distraction but that does not work most times because he is stubborn, JUST LIKE HIS DADDY... Sometimes his tantrum can last upwards of 45 minutes... It's exhausting. It's always worse with me than anyone else too, which I'm curious to know if that's normal as well. Does that seem to be the case with your DD?

I let Tommy continue his fit and when he is done, he will stand up again and walk around. However, if we are out, I pick him up and console him - I know not the best but I can't stand when my DC throw fits in public.

Re: How do you handle temper tantrums of a 12 month old???
DS started having mini tantrums about a month ago--I suspect they will get w"orse over time. He's very Jekyll and Hyde too.
Usually it's because he wants something or wants to do something he should not. I tell him no or explain something isn't good for him "Yucky" or "Bad" etc., whatever word applies. Then I usually look for something else he can play with instead or take him to another activity. The diversion works now, he forgets quickly, though in time he will not.
If he's mad because he's in the pack n play while I'm showering or whatever, I finish what I need to do, and if he cries he cries. I do talk to him and let him know I'm almost done, etc. I'll sing him songs from the shower too, which he likes.

Gavin's tantrums are pretty quick, I put him down and let him fuss by himself, he seems to get over it pretty quick when I walk away...
Don't know how this will work in public though....

His tantrums began at 10 mts old. We walked away from him, and still do. Tantrums we ignore. Hitting and throwing gets time outs. In public, DH takes him outside and gives him a time out. Or we put him in the stroller and let him howl away until he is done.

I just remove them from the situation or use distraction. Another good one? they r screaming whisper in their ear-they stop to listen. After 4kids and looking it up to comfirm I just think its too young of a age for a time out.JMHO
My older two turned out a-ok!

DD is 11 months but I call her my drama queen...even my friend that watches her says she is an amazing actress already!
When im home with DD and shes starts acting out I remove her from the situation...if she keeps it up to her crib she goes. She stays there until she calms down or falls asleep and wakes up in a better mood.

Re: How do you handle temper tantrums of a 12 month old???
yeah, we're going thru this! I ignore it. Its getting better w/things around the house. For ex, he would point to go downstairs and if we didn't take him he'd throw a crying fit and lay on the floor hyseterical. I'd leave him there and walk away. But now w/going downstairs he'll point to go down there but if I say "we're not going downstairs now" he doesn't do it anymore b/c he knows he wont get his way.
At 15mos we're dealing more w/public places/new places, if I don't let him walk around and explore he'll throw a fit, scream, lay on the floor. NOT FUN! Its hard to ignore b/c I can't let him lay on the floor somewhere out and walk away kwim? In this case I've been picking him up and removing him from where ever we are if I can. Then he just flops around in my arms screaming but what can you do??

Re: How do you handle temper tantrums of a 12 month old???
Honestly, I let him cry. I put him on the floor wherever he is and I let him go at it. Generally within 2 minutes something in the vicinity catches his eye and he forgets what he is crying about. He has been crying, and throwing himself like this since 8 months….he has a very bad temper when he doesn’t get his way. Luckily he rarely gets this way. And I will add he has never done this while we are out at a store or something...
I learned from watching my niece that its for the attention they act like this. I can clearly remember my niece throwing a tandrum in the hall way, I stepped over her and walking into the kitchen and began talking to my SIL. The crying stopped….she then slide herself down the hall to the kitchen doorway….then started crying again!

Re: How do you handle temper tantrums of a 12 month old???
Ella throws alot of tantrums whenever she doesn't get her way. We ignore and she will stop eventually. Whenever she hits or tries to bite we firmly hold her hands tightly and let her know that little hands are not for hitting it is for making nice. If she continues we will put her to sit by herself in a corner or somewhere by herself and this usually works for us.

Re: How do you handle temper tantrums of a 12 month old???
Thanks for all of the advice. I guess I have many tantrums to look forward to. I'll have to let the drama queen continue her performances until she realizes they don't get her anywhere.
