My dad is a used car salesman and he tells me to do your research. Go on the internet, get prices and always be willing to walk away.

I find out the price everyone else is paying through edmunds.com and then leave the dealership until they meet or beat that price.

DH and I are in the market (or will be soon) and I would love to hear what tactics you have used in the past that were successful in negotiating a deal on a new car.
TIA!
Best thing to do is ask to see the Invoice price & work up from there. If you ask to see the invoice they have to show it to you. Also, know about the car. DO NOT rely on the salesperson to "educate" you about the car, since most of the time they only know about what is good to give in a sales pitch. Know the competition as well, and try to see fi any dealerships are running trade-in specials or deals to get last year's cars off the lot.

They have the highest overturn & are favoured by the national distributors. (Meaning if you want something specific they would be first in line on LI to get it). Ask for Benny.

Re: How do you negotiate a better price on a new car?
I used to work in car sales.
A lot of the things the laides said were totally correct.
Never, EvER negotiate monthly payment. There are so many different leases and financing programs they can put you through. If you have to, say it's a cash sale, and then once you've negotiated the car, THEN say you want to finance or lease.
Do your homework. Find out what the invoice price is on the car you want, and add features, NY/CA emissions and destination charge. Ask to see these charges itemized. Also, find out if there are current lease or financing deals you may qualify for, brand loyalty, first time buyer, recent college grad, etc. They won't always offer if you don't ask.
Sometimes the easiest way is to get quotes online. Dealerships today now have salespeople dedicated to just online sales, and the way we did it in my dealership and I know many dealerships do this, is they have a "no haggle" internet price that is a set amount over invoice. This is usually better than what you'll get with a salesman in the store (Anfd you can still meet your 'net salesperson in the store after negotiating online). Dealers know that online buyers are more education and they won't try to blow as much smoke. Also, don't negotiate total price, start form invoice and negotiate up. "How about $300 over invoice?" etc.
Also, compare dealerships, and they WILL compete, especially if it is the end of the month. Don't SHOP on the last day of the month, go in about 5 days before, and ask them point blanlk how much it will cost if you TAKE DELIVERY by the end of the month. You have to drive it out by the 31st for them to get the bonus. Dealers are especially hungry at the end of the month because of those bonuses, and there are also salesman who are either struggling to meet their personal quota, or striving to be top seller that month, so at the end of the month, they will be hungrier and the numbers will be in your favor. Also, it you start with that as a bnargaining tactic, they already know you have some inside knowledge. If they tell you they don't care if it's the end of the month, they're probably full of it. Everyone wants to push out those last few cars.
For my last car I got quotes from several dealerships. One dealership offered me $500 over and said that was as low as he could go. Another offered me $400 over, and they had the color I wanted. I called the first dealership to ask if they could match it, and they called me back and offered me $300 over since they didn't have the color I wanted. As it turned out, we liked the black better anyway, AND we got a better deal.
The truth is, if a dealership is doing well, they may money selling it to you AT invoice because they are also making money just for moving the inventory in bonuses, etc. I think there is also a penalty for keeping a car on the lot for a long time, so if there's a car that's been there awhile, they may want to move that. You cna usually feel them out. If there's a car they're really pushing, and you like it, pretend you really don't. They will keep coming down. We were offered a Passat for the same price as our Jetta becuase they were trying to move the inventory.
Good Luck!

FYI: all US Toyotas are made in the US now. The engineering is still from Japan via their California HQ, but they are all made her (Kentucky) with the exception of the Scion line.

If you are a AAA member, they also have a buying program. We used it recently to buy a new car.

I walk into the dealer with the printout from Edmunds.com I will only pay invoice or below. Whichever dealer will sell me the car for that gets the deal.

There is. It's called Dealer Holdback and it is explained in Edmunds. I got a good deal on an Accord I bought because they had to get the car for me. Because it wasn't sitting on the lot, I made them deduct several hundred dollars from the price because there was no holdback. I paid just several hundred over invoice.

Re: How do you negotiate a better price on a new car?
If you have a trade-in - get TOP DOLLAR for it. The more you get for a trade in, the less you pay in taxes overall.
Example: $30,000 car = pay taxes on $30,000 $30,000 car -$12,000 trade-in = pay taxes on only $18,000
I did this - and it worked out great!
