How do you split holidays??
We are actually lucky for Christmas, his family celebrates big on Christmas Eve and my family celebrates big on Christmas Day...
Last year we came home from our honeymoon on Thanksgiving and since my dad picked us up we just went there for dinner and Easter to his family (we get to both but just eat with one).
Mothers Day was easy last year cuz my parents were away. I think we spent most of Fathers Day with my family because his dad was working.
Other than Christmas we really have no logic to where we go. Just wondering how everyone else decides?

Re: How do you split holidays??
Thanksgiving we spent with DH's family in Hilton Head, SC. We go down for the week
Christmas Eve is with DH's family as my family does a big Christmas. So we spend Christmas with my family
We came home from our HM last year on Easter, so we went to my inlaws as my parents were away.
Mother's day we split between brunch & dinner
Father's day is usually with FIL bc my dad is usually away at our summer house.

Re: How do you split holidays??
we dont have to split because my MIL always comes to our house...or with us for any holiday.
My sis and BIL split the holidays, so that every other holiday is spent with one side of the family or another.
For example....they will spend Christmas Eve with us this year...and Day with my BIL family...next year its switched.
they do this for every holiday, so at least they get to spend the whole day with whomever they are with that year.
They have been together for 16 years and it seems to work great for them....no eating 3 meals...or having to run from one house to another.

Re: How do you split holidays??
Thanksgiving--DH's family Easter-my family
Christmas-first 1/2 day with his, second 1/2 day with mine
mother's day--split the day
when we split the day it's a pain because we have to travel about 3 hours round trip to get from one to the other.

Re: How do you split holidays??
Thanksgiving we switch years, this year is with the inlaws
Christmas - my family celebrates before the actual holiday so the eve and day are with the inlaws
Easter - my family celebrates on Sat, so Sun we are with the inlaws (see a pattern here )
Mother's Day - we see my family usually on Sat, we go to this Grandma's on Sunday since we don't talk to my actual MIL
Fathers Day is with the ILs b/c my dad lives in TX

Re: How do you split holidays??
My sister, BIL, dad, stepmom, little brother and sister all live in NY
My SIL, MIl and FIL just moved to Charlotte (where we live)
And my mom lives in Georgia (about 4 hours from me)
This is what we are doing
We are driving to NY for about 5 days for Thanksgiving. Then for Christmas my mom, sister and BIL are coming to Charlotte to celebrate with us.
Next year we will probably do the opposite, stay in Charlotte for Thanksgiving and go to NY for Christmas, well see what happens

We usually end up hosting them all, but we cannot do that this year. I am dreading this, and it will be even worse next year

Re: How do you split holidays??
We dont need to split them. My dh and his sister dont talk and his parents always spend all holidays with her.
So, every holiday is with my family and we see his parents before or after.

Re: How do you split holidays??
We don't split. We celebrate all together (my family and the in laws). We're very lucky because our brothers aren't married so our family is on the small side. This year DHs mom has thanksgiving, we have christmas and my fam has easter

New Years Eve: His Family When I was a teenager/college I always went out with friends, DH always spends it with his family...

Re: How do you split holidays??
Thanksgiving - with his side, my parents go away usually
Christmas Eve - we spend with my parents, usually out to dinner.
Christmas day - we split, my parents house and his mom's house. We all live in close proximity to each other so its not so bad.

Re: How do you split holidays??
actually pretty easy for us. Since we're jewish, most holidays are more than one day long:
Thanksgiving - I always host
Hanukkah - one day with my family another with DH's
Passover - One Sedar with my family, One with his
Rosh Hashanna - Same deal as above.

Re: How do you split holidays??
It's easy for me. DH's family is really just him & his parents. His mom in the 7 years that I have known him, has never once had Thanksgiving. They don't really do anything that day. And they are jewish, so I don't have to worry about where to go for Christmas. It's great. Plus, we are both only children...so it makes things that much easier for everyone.

Re: How do you split holidays??
Because we have big families the only fair way was to switch each year....
Whoever we spend it with one year,,the following year we are with the other family...
Also,,whoever we spend Thanksgiving with,,the "other" gets Christmas Eve...
Example.. Thanksgiving- his family..next year my family
Christmas Eve- my family ..next year his family
Christmas Day- his family..next year my family
We still end up seeing the "other" anyway even if it is for a short amont of time...
The best part..both families are very Italian so we NEVER miss out on the traditional food!!!

Re: How do you split holidays??
well... his whole family, except his parents, live waaay out in PA- like 6 hours away. his parents usually end up going out there for every holiday. we just can't do that with our work schedules, so we usually see my family on holidays, and then "celebrate" with his parents before or after.... the only holiday we go out to PA for is thanksgiving- and we end up seeing my family the day after or 2 days after... i guess i'm lucky that DH is an only child so theres less people we have to worry about... and he didn't grow up being/living close to his aunts and uncles and cousins, so he doesn't really miss seeing them on holidays...

Re: How do you split holidays??
For the most part, its with mine.
Christmas Eve is bigger for my family and Christmas Day is bigger in his family so we split it up that way.
Mother's Day, we usually celebrate it with our moms together.
Father's Day, we usually celebrate it with our dad's together as well.
Easter and Thanksgiving we usually have it at my mom's house.........sometimes our in-laws will join us if they will be home.

I am also a bit surprised to see how many do not host any holidays.
my situation is interesting...and confusing...I have hosted in the past but because we are not living in our house right now (my parents are -dhs job has us moving around a lot) we cant host...although when I say "at my parents house" It is really my house, my mom and I will most likely BOTH do the cooking, and im sure MIL would bring something too
This year and next year will be crazy, but once we are back in our house, my parents are in their house, we will have more stability and we will most likely do Christmas!
