How Do You Tell Someone They Smell?
We are very clean people in our office, we all shower daily and we don't smell. There is a new person that STINKS. He smells like pooh (seriously). We gag around him. This person is a lawyer and I just cannot imagine the higher ups having a conversation with him telling him he smells.

You don't take situations like these into your own hands. Talk to HR and let them handle it.

Are you sure he didn't just fart?
Does he really smell like poo all the time?? Maybe he needs to do laundry more often.

*I* wasn't going to say anything. I'm just curious as to HOW you tell someone they smell without offending.
We don't have HR
And yes..it's a nasty pooh, I don't wash my butt, kind of smell We all want to die when he comes around

Knowing myself, though, when he came around, I would probably throw a hidden innuendo by spraying my area with air freshener.

What a horrible situation. I would have the boss/manager say something.

Re: How Do You Tell Someone They Smell?
we had someone like this at the last firm I worked for. Here's the not nice version of how co-worker approached it:
So...."John" what cologne are you wearing?
I didn't put any on today.
Oh, so you WANTED to smell that way?
IMO there is NEVER a nice way to tell someone that they have bad hygenie. The only more tactful way to do it is to have someone who is most friendly with him inquire as to his health.

Re: How Do You Tell Someone They Smell?
Is there a way you (or a co-worker) could leave a typed note on his desk anonymously so that you could avoid embarrassing him in front of everyone?

Oh dear
Sometimes I seriously wonder how people that smell like that cannot smell themselves. We have A LOT of smelly clients too. My boss actually told one of them he couldn't come back to the office because the smell was making the girls sick and that he couldn't appear in court because they won't have that there (his hearing was done by telephone).

good to see you are finally catching on
ETA: someone(s) had to have hired this person. since they let the smell in, THEY should address it.
there is no way to avoid embarrassment, unless the person doesn't care at all...so don 't even try. I don't see how an anonymous letter or email would be less embarrassing...or less humiliating than spraying your workspace after a visit, so might as well just come out with it...air it out, so to speak

Hearing was done by phone because the guy smelled?! Had to be a pretty awful odor. If your boss said it to a client, surely he can tell a staff member! Is it because the guy does not clean his clothes? Get him a dry cleaning gift certificate!

It was really bad. About 1,000 times worse than this guy.
Maybe it's his clothes..who knows, but I can't imagine being a client and actually having to SIT in there with him.
At first we thought it was the garbage, but we took the can out and the smell is still around. Not QUITE as bad, but still smelly, and when he walks by and creates a draft..ick!

Re: How Do You Tell Someone They Smell?
I am a definite conflict avoider and could never tell someone they smelled.
Honestly, I would make sure to have a really good supply of fragrant lotion around... whenever he was near, I would lotion up my hands and put them near my nose so that I got the nice smelly lotion smell instead of pooh!

Re: How Do You Tell Someone They Smell?
Let a HR (preferrably a male) handle it.
I once had that problem in my corporate fitness center. The minute he started working out the WHOLE PLACE filled with his smell I did not even have to look, you knew he was in the center.
They did not want to address the issue, so the best news I got from HR was that he was leaving the company.

Re: How Do You Tell Someone They Smell?
Honestly I would FIRST find out if he's not ill.... there are alot of people that have colostomy bags and I've heard that they STINK!!!! there is some kind of carbon in them that can defuse the order but it very well could be a health situation..
IF it's not then the boss needs to address it..does this man go into court smelling like that? Your bosses haven't gotten a whiff???
We had a woman like that years ago in the office and someone left a deodorant stick on her desk when she was out to lunch!

Re: How Do You Tell Someone They Smell?
We had that issue a few years back.
Someone filed an anonymous complaint with HR. And HR sent out a general email about hygiene and it's necessity to comply.

So true--I worked with someone years ago who had a colostomy bag. I could not use the bathroom for the rest of the day after she did. I threw up from it once and there were many days I had to skip lunch. She was the sweetest lady, too, so that made it more difficult. Eventually, I got a key to a private bathroom that was supposed to be just for the judges I was working for. I snuck my co-workers into there sometimes, too.
DH had someone from a temp. agency in his office for a while. The guy kept farting and it smelled really bad. He called in sick on his second or third day, saying he was having a "gastronomical problem."
