How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

Jack really hasn't had a bad one before - and this one looks like it hurts.

Normally I just put Aquaphor on. I'm thinking I may need to step it up a notch for this bad boy!
TIA!

Usually Triple Paste and within a day it's gone.

Andy had a really bad diaper rash as a result of an allergic reaction to Huggies diapers and nothing worked until the pediatrician prescribed something. That time it was raw and chapped and bleeding. Chat Icon

Does anyone use Balmex these days? I have about 5 tubes of it here I just remembered.

I will go and get Butt Paste today! Thanks!

My MIL swears by a concoction of Gold Bond Powder mixed into Vaseline. It's messy to mix but it's cured a lot of diaper rashes on dozens of kids.

It's also a great hand moisturizer for mommy, especially in the winter months.

I use butt paste and if in a day or two it hasn't calmed down I use triple paste.

The last diaper rash he had wouldn't go away and only got worse...I looked it up online and it looked like a yeast rash. I would advise to contact the dr at that point (even though I didn't - I treated with Lotrimin and it went away fast).

Re: How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

DD has had 2 horrible diaper rashes so far and the 1st time we just used vasaline and let her go nakie. The second ended up being a yeast infection and we had to get vusion cream which is $200 a tube Chat Icon Chat Icon but her dr. gave us a card that made the co-pay only $10 and within 2 days it was almost gone.

Hopefully DS feels better soon! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

How do you know when it's more than just a regular diaper rash?

The best way to describe what her yeast infection looked like was little red bumps with somewhat of a rash.

The 1st time she was just all red and raw but i knew something was different when i saw the bumps.

Re: How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

He had tiny bumps there yesterday - but I aired him out for a long time and it looks like they went away today.

I'm going to get the triple paste and leave him naked for awhile I guess. If it doesn't look better by tomorrow I'll call my ped.

Thanks everyone!

Re: How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

For a fungal infection. Red bumps.

Make sure skin is dry before applying the cream
Lotramin (yes the fungal cream) 1st
then put thick Desatin on top.

I usually use a very thick coat of desatin several times per day.

Change his diaper often.

Butt Paste has always worked for Lily.
Tried to switch to Desitin and it was terrible!

Our doctor recommends Balmex now b/c it's newly formulated. But only the tubes that have the pink box that SAYS new formula. If you don't have that then he recommends Triple Paste and air drying a LOT.

Re: How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

instead of wiping him at diaper changes, take him into the bath and run cool water over him and pat him only. Let dry completely and apply zinc oxide cream (balmex, desitin, or triple paste).

Re: How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

I use the Earth's Best organic, but it is not strong like some of the others mentioned. DS has very sensitive skin like mommy, so I have to be careful what I use. Also, if you are not already doing so, use the newborn sensitive wipes or soft paper towels for a few days.Chat Icon

I use Triple Paste.

And it sounds like you are airing him out, that is the best thing to do, it dries it out.

We use A&D ointment. It's the only thing that seems to work for DS when he gets one.

Re: How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

I use Balmex and it seems to take it away rather quickly. DS has had bad ones in the past and the only thing I have used is Balmex, so I have no basis of comparison. But it did take it away in about a day.

Re: How do you treat a nasty diaper rash

triple paste user here but DD had a rash dr.wasnt sure what it was and the triple paste was just masking it so they gave us rx for nystantin and it worked. they think it was fungal.

WOW - ok - that is a BAD diaper rash. I never even knew it could get THAT bad. Chat Icon

He did have some of those bumps though - I'll have to keep an eye out. Not even 1/4 as much redness as the pic though.

Thanks Ang! Chat Icon
