Re: How does everyone keep up!

Planning ahead helps me...I take the chicken or pork chops out of the freezer in the AM before work...I clean the kitchen and bathroom lightly (like wiping down the counters and the sink, toilet etc) at night. I straighten up, throw out junk mail. Just so when the weekend comes I am not totally overwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, there are days when it goes out the window, but most of the time I just plan ahead and have a little routine.

I try to keep up little bits at a time --

mail is sorted and tosses/shredded/filed right away now. we used to let it pile up and it became a chore.

I wipe down the counters, stove top & outside the fridge whenever I do the dishes.

I keep clorox wipes in the bathroom for quick cleanups.

I sweep & swiffer the kitchen & bathroom at the same time then vacuum.

I do laundry weekly.

I use those swiffer dusters for the bedroom & LR furniture.

It's not spotless but it's not a disaster area.

I order groceries and try to plan my meals around the sales. I am working on cooking in advance and packing lunches daily.

My mom had the same thoughts as me --- a messy house doesn't mean a bad house! We have a one bedroom condo and it's a disaster. Between school, weddings, going away and other events...and the sheer fact that I hate cleaning, it's a mess.

I'm promising to clean a bit tonight because I don't want to spend the weekend doing that! I just get so tired when I get home!

Re: How does everyone keep up!

i teach, so i guess it helps a little bit that i'm home by 4 everyday... but its still soo tough to keep up!
but, i found that if i do like a half hour every day after work, it really makes it better... like one night i'll take a half hour to dust, another night do the bathroom, another night vacuum... that way when the weekend comes around, i'm not spending it cleaning Chat Icon and i do two things at once- throw in laundry and while thats running, i'll clean the bathroom or whatever....
and really just putting things back as soon as your done with them really helps keep down clutter... although TRY to tell my husband that!
Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
cooking is ok if i plan ahead every sunday and think of meals for the week... for one of the meals, we usually make one big meal ( like a big pot of pasta or something in the crock pot) that we eat for two nights, and that really saves alot of stress.
we're moving to a bigger house this summer, and i dont' even WANT to think about how i'm gonna keep up with that! i told DH i might have to break down and get a cleaning lady then... LOL

Re: How does everyone keep up!

Like other posters DH and I say this ALL the time!

We have a 1 bedroom apartment right now and we are very happy because we can keep up with the cleaning (we're both very anal about keeping things clean). He on the other hand is anal about keeping things neat and in order so that helps.

I have to say Dh is a big, big help and I couldn't do it without him. He does the laundry two days a week. We both clean the entire apartment on saturday mornings and do food shopping every weekend as well. I think I'm going to try and do the food shopping on a weeknight because that will free some time for us.

As for meals, I usually do the cooking unless I'll be home from school late (he gets home earlier than I do). I always make extra so we have leftovers, so I only end up cooking a meal like 3 days out of the week. We usually get take out on fridays and go out for dinner on saturdays.

I would hate to think how things are with a house and/or kids. I guess you just have to pick and choose and EVERYTHING can't be clean or organized all the time.

Re: How does everyone keep up!

I have a great DH. If we are both home for dinner (which rarely happens lately), then we cook together. He doesn't expect me to "cook his dinner".

We let the house get really messy/disorganized during the week and then clean it on weekends. We do laundry on Sundays.

It works for us.

I cant even tell you how I keep a neat/clean house, work full time and take care of a 6 month old....it JUST gets done.........

DH is great because he will start or prepare dinner since he is home before me. Beinjg organized helps alot and also my son isnt crawling yet. I am sure once he startes crawling the neatness will be hard to maintain......

Once my son is down for the night, I will start to tidy up and I do 1 chore per night.

We do the exact same thing. I have a 7 1/2 month old, work full time, cook dinner every night, etc. I do not have a washing machine at home so I do laundry on the weekends and I try to clean one room a night so that by the weekend there really is not much to do.

I soooo wished my mom was like yours-lol!! Her house was always clean, mostly because she was a sahm and cleaned everyday.
Now she will tell me not to stress out and take my time cleaning but then in another breath when she comes to the house will comment on something that is not done-lol!! I can't win-lol!!

I have to give credit to DH - without his helping out it would be a disaster. He helps with all the little things for dinner (like shredding cheese - boiling water) and cleans the dishes afterwards so that I can do something else like iron or clean up.

On the weekend he takes on the bathrooms, vacuums, and throws the laundry in the wash to help out - and it really is a big help.

Re: How does everyone keep up!

To be honest, my DH helps a lot!

To say that he "helps" is actually an understatement. He does his share, if not more.

I know for a lot of ladies this isn't an option or even realistic.

We do our major cleaning and laundry on the weekends. That's when we have the most time.

Re: How does everyone keep up!

I don't keep up at all.

There are things in my "to be ironed 'pile tht I can't even remember when I last wore them. I still haven't done my taxes either.

My DH does the grocery shopping, laundry , cooking & dishes & I STILL can't keep up. Everything but the kitchen is a mess.

I usually get home at 8 & finish dinner by 9, so the 2-3 hours I'm awake after that are usually not spent cleaning & then on the weekends, I try to do a few things, but we we always have to go somewhere & recently I have had to work the occasional weekend.

Prioritize. That's how.
Obviously I have to go to work, so that's not optional.
Once all of the baby's needs are met, I just go down the line...
Dinner? I cook if I have the time, eat something leftover or a frozen meal if I don't feel like it.
Cleaning? Hahaha, come on, who cares if my place is clean? Ava's just going to mess it up again.

No, but seriously. I handle it by not worrying about it all. On Sundays I usually make at least one meal and freeze it so that if I have a rough day, then I can just defrost it. We also keep Lean Cuisine's in the freezer for that reason. We also have decided a clean house doesn't always have to be a priority. Being happy and relaxed is a priority. If we can fit in cooking and cleaning, great, if not, too bad!

That is great advice! I am too much of a neat freak and need to relax especially once the baby is here.

I can definetly relate!!!!!!!
I can't keep up this week! Between the passover dinner with DH family and getting home at 11:30pm the last couple of nights, I feel like I'm on speed mode and I hate it!

Re: How does everyone keep up!

I feel like its alot to keep up with also. Three nights a week I work until 7...so sometimes we don't even eat dinner until 8-ish. Chat Icon

I try to keep up with cleaning the house a little here and there and always clean on the weekends. Laundry is also a tough thing to keep up with. DH has a lot of work clothes, socks, a tees.
