How does the dr. diagnose acid reflux?
What kind of tests need to be done? Are they painful for the baby? I am convinced my DS has it.

Never had any test.. they just took the symptoms and AGREED with me that it was reflux. One dr. said it wasn't bc he wasn't spitting up but the next time another dr. said it DEF was reflux. Silent reflux.
What are your DC symptoms?

I think my son might has silent reflux as well because he doesn't usually spit up and is always looking to eat. Rapid weight gain (which dr said was fine because he was proportioned), wanting to eat and eating large amounts, arching back, moving his arms like crazy and stiffening his legs and body, while crying hysterically and turning red after feedings and sometimes out of nowhere or out of a pretty deep sleep. Seems agitated and in pain when not sleeping (every 10-15 min) and sleeping is difficult. He is also very gassy. Does that sound like reflux?

Sure does sound like reflux!!! The big thing for me was the min he took a few sips he'd scream!! so i knew it couldn't be JUST gas. KWIM.. but it def sounds like REALLY BAD GAS OR DEF REFLUX!! We tried changing his formula before he went on Zantac. Try that first and see if he gets any better. it takes a few days to a week to see a difference. Good luck!!! (and trust your mommy instincts!!!

DS was the same exact way and he was not diagnosed with Acid Reflux. My ped said he was colicky. I switched his formula to Nutramigen. It helped..but we also brought him to our chiropractor. People have different opinions regarding babies and chiropractors but I can tell you that we saw a huge difference immediately.

Re: How does the dr. diagnose acid reflux?
Just spoke with my dr. and he said it definitely sounds like reflux I feel so horrible that he's in pain and I can't do anything about it. Dr. told me to give him Maalox 3x a day for a week and see how that works. I am praying it helps him. He didn't mention anything about changing his diet or amt of milk. I give him 4-4.5 oz of breastmilk every 3-4 hrs and supplement with Similac formula at night. If Maalox doesn't work I am assuming I will have to pick a formula and stick with that exclusively?
He also has a really bad clogged tear duct in one eye. He's only 2 weeks old! Poor guy

Re: How does the dr. diagnose acid reflux?
my dd has bad reflux also, she sounds like shes in so much painif i lay her down right after she eats. Try putting your dc in an upright position when he sleeps like in a swing or bouncy chair, that made a huge difference for my dd. She just falls right asleep and it doesnt hurt anymore. shes been sleping in the swing for a few weeks. We just bought the fisher price newborn rock and play sleeper. Is great i really recommend it. she sleeps very comfortablly now.

Dr suggested an elevated sleep positioner which I used last night and it def helped-I keep him in the swing for most of the day or hold him to soothe him..

We have this FP rocker/sleeper.While, DS doesn't sleep in it b/c he can only fall asleep on his chest, he does hang out in it & I can slide it all over the house with him in it.

Re: How does the dr. diagnose acid reflux?
Sounds like it. We also take DD to our chiropractor. We were against giving DD zantac at 2 months old so we bring her to our family chiropractor weekly and it has helped SOO much!

You don't need to stop BFing b/c DC has reflux. Both FF and BF babies can have reflux. If Maalox doesn't work, there are medications that can help with the reflux.
