How does your doctor time your IUIs?
Some of the threads on here got me looking up info about IUI timing online. It seems that 36 hours after trigger seems to be the recommendation, although some doctors do it earlier and some do it later.
In my experience with Dr. B thus far, he always does B2Bs (although last cycle I only had one because of holidays). I have always triggered the night before my first one, which is just after 12 hours later, and then my second one is the next day, so around the 36 hour mark. It makes me wonder about the point of the first one, but I guess he wants the sperm to be there in case I O earlier.
What is your doctor's protocol for trigger/IUIs?
ETA: Is anyone out there who doesn't see Dr. B?!

the first one is more important than the second. you want the sperm to be there already for the egg, not the other way around. since they wash the sperm and "only the strong survive" the best swimmers in the uterus already should last until the egg is released and get a head start at swimming up the tubes.

Actually, as per Dr B, the second one is more important than the first one. He said that contrary to what is preferred for natural conception, the best timing for IUI is as close to ovulation as possible making the second day of IUIs the most important.

Absolutely!! The sperm will be there waiting for the egg and then you will to cover the rest of your bases! You came this far, it's definitely worth it!

And I believed you, since you're always so knowledgeable!

Re: How does your doctor time your IUIs?
I go to RSofNY - They don't do B2B IUI's (not with me anyway). They time it approximately 36 hours after trigger. I was told that they like to time it within 6 hours of ovulation (either before or after).

Me too. I was told that "washed" sperm only live for about 6 hours in your uterus. So if you don't time it exactly right (within 6 hours of ovulation, which happens about 36 hours after trigger), it's a waste of time.

Re: How does your doctor time your IUIs?
Oh, I didnt know washed sperm only lived for 6 hrs. I thought it was the regular 72. Interesting!
Maybe they do the first one in case you O early on your own. At that point, they know you have mature follies so I guess you could O.
Then again I have absolutely NO clue about this stuff b/c it has only been thrown at me over the last 14 days.

So, if unwashed sperm supposedly last up to 72hrs, doesn't it make more sense to before then? As opposed to 2 IUIs? ...
I'm sure there's a reason for the two IUIs though.... I can ask Dr.B about this tomorrow.

Re: How does your doctor time your IUIs?
I have had IUI's done at both Coluimbia and SIRM-NY. Both were done at 36 hours. IMHO, an IUI done 12 hours after trigger is practically useless and I would be very concerned about that. Yes..it is good to have sperm waiting, but remember you are speaking of WASHED sperm and depending upon whom you believe, it can last anywhere from only 6 hours to 24 hours. If this is true..doing an IUI at 12 hours is problematic to say the least when we know that the eggs are timed to release at around 36 hours with a trigger shot. Those who get back to back IUI's usually seem to get the first one done at 24 hours or so from what I have read and then the next day. THIS makes sense to me. I even read a recent paper by a Dr that appears to have good success with IUI's for women whom are poor responders and he thinks IUI's should be done even later...after ovulation so he does them 40 hours after trigger or later.
IMHO...when you are getting IUI's or IVF, when you receive treatment should not revolve around whether a doctor is available on a particular day or not. They need to be ready to do an IUI or IVF retrieval or transfer 7 days a week.
FYI to the poster above-be very careful about when you BD in relation to your IUI's...even when your partner has good counts. I BD'd once the night of trigger...36 hours before IUI..and DH's post-wash count was dreadful...and he has excellent counts. This is not true for everyone, but for some. The next time around, we BD'd the day before trigger and that with supps worked beautifully. I would however BD the night of the last IUI after it is done for sure to cover my bases...perhaps even the next morning.

ITA agree with this. This is every doctor's responsibility. If they can't make themselves available they need to get a back up.

Makes total sense. I wish I would have know all this about IUIs while I was getting them done

i go to RSofNY too. They just do the one IUI, but it's always 24 hours later (the next morning after the trigger).
reading all this stuff about washed sperm only living for 6 hours is troubling tho. why do just the one IUI 24 hours later if that's the case?
