How early can you tell if your baby is left-handed?
My DD is only 6 and a half weeks, but I have been thinking for about 2 weeks now that she might be left-handed. Is this at all possible to determine yet? She seems to do a lot more with her left hand. She reaches for me with it, she sucks her fingers on that hand but not her right hand, and she just generally moves it around more. Is this just coincidence at this age?

I have absolutely no idea but its so funny that you wrote this bc I just said to DH tonight that I think our DS is lefty!! He is 8.5 weeks old and also def seems to favor his left hand. Dh is hoping so since he is a proud lefty himself and he says it's good for sports (??)
If anyone knows how early you can tell, let us know!

It's not really conclusive until the child is much older, like 5-6 years old. However, my mom swears she knew I was left handed when I was a few weeks old.

around 3, 3 1/2 years old a child will show dominance of one hand over the other

i dont think you can tell nearly that early...DD is 12.5 months and we still have no clue im sure we wont for a couple years yet.
My dad has thought since the day she was born she was a lefty (i think its wishful thinking since my grandpa, his dad was a lefty)

I don't know, but I would be suprised if DS is not a lefty.... both DH and I are, and I'm fairly certain there's a genetic component to hand dominance....
I suspect it's not necessary to really know hand dominance until they're going to write.... so whatever hand he uses to pick up toys and spoons is fine with us.....

It can be up to the 5 or 6 years old before a child has a definite hand dominance, in my opinion (I'm an occupational therapist) 6 week's is way to early to tell...sorry
