If you have more than one DC its hard to avoid going out. How did you food shop and such?

I don't think it is horrible, but I would be very cautious of where you are going.

I know we took my DD out a bunch of times in the very beginning, but always put a blanket over the car seat so she was not exposed.

My kids were out almost immediately, especially # 2 and 3...

The only places I avoided were enclosed environements with lots of kids

I just put a blanket over the carrier and tried to be in and out.
She was born in late June so cold and flu season was over too

Not horrible but I avoided it as much as I could. Also, Peapod has become my BFF!

All depends on everyone's threshold & own experience.

I had the baby out, dropping ds at daycare, etc. She also wound up in the hospital at 2 weeks old with a 103-104 fever & a spinal tap so from my experience, don't do it.

As for food shopping, peapod, DH or when DH is home.

I took dd to bru and food shopping at 8 days old. I just put a blanket over her infant carrier she was fine. I also went on a weekday during the middle of the day so hardly anyone was out.

Those were my thoughts. Just avoid crowded places or enclosed busy places.

With the 2nd it's really hard to stay home. I asked ped what I should do and she said to keep baby covered in the car seat.

DS was born right in the middle of swine flu, Oct. '09. He went everywhere with us. I just put a blanket over her his carrier. (You'd also be surprised how much fits under a snap and go!

Family helped with errands (IF I couldn't get it done on the weekend when there were multiple people to help) - mom would drop something off after work. We used peapod for groceries. DH would sometimes go on weekends or after work if we could work it out.

I personally wouldn't take a week old baby shopping but that is my personal comfort level. I planned things so that there was no need to do that.

I didn't stay in the house though - I took DD on walks outside, the park for walks etc. Places where DC wasn't around other people but we were not stuck indoors.

DH did the shopping. There was no way I could do it with the three kids myself anyway.

Re: how horrible is it to have a nb out at a week old?

As long as you understand the risks.

Protocol if baby (up to 8weeks old) gets a fever of 100.4 is trip to ER with Spinal tap.

We worked around it. DH did the groceries. I waited for DH to come home.

We DID go out when DS was 2 weeks old, just not in any stores/malls. We went for a walk everyday in our neighborhood. I could not stay in for 8 weeks but I did not go in any stores.

My first 3 kids were out the first day out of the hospital (1 day old), never were sick or had any problems. My 4th baby never went out except once to go to a doctors check up at 5 days old and he ended up hospitalized a few days later with RSVChat Icon

Re: how horrible is it to have a nb out at a week old?

As a mom of 3 kids, i think it's totally normal.

With DD#1 i was a single mom and had no choice but to take her to the store with me, so at a week old she was out with me in the store.

With DD#2 we were in the store also at about a week old.

DD#3 we were at the beach and local pool at a week old.

As long as you keep your child covered up, they'll be fine. i actually found that with having newborns out and them being so tiny people actually kept more of a distance. We never had a problem.

My pediatrician's reccs were:

Outside at any age (but meaning just outside the house... like a walk in the park without any people contact) but only with outside temps >70 and <80 degrees.

At 4 weeks, she said OK to go to very non-crowded malls (she told me which ONE in my neighborhood especially)... it is the equivalent to the Manhasset mall.

Until 6 weeks, no crowds. I think the thought being, he would have some immunizations by then and, because I was BF, he would have some of that immunization by then.

I bet you would be fine most of the time... but I know quite a few people who had to watch their LO get spinal taps.

My DS was out at 10 days old at the mall getting his picture taken with santa. He was fine.
