please help--3 week old pooped over 17 times today and has a HORRIBLE diaper rash

i'm not exaggerating. 17 is the latest count and it could even be more than that. my poor baby.

her little tush is dark red and raised and it must be so painful. i'm lathering on the triple paste very thickly every time i change her and am changing her very frequently.

she was on regular enfamil and i changed her to gentlease today hoping that would help things. she's been pretty gassy today as well.

she was also using huggies natural diapers (which i hate) so i've switched her back to pampers sensitive.

has anyone ever had a NB poop this excessively?? it's crazy! i don't know if i should call the ped over this or not. there was mucous in her poop one time about 2 days ago. nothing else has changed.

BTW...as i was typing this she just pooped AGAIN...a lot! where is it all coming from??

I think I would call the ped because of the rash. When DS was a few weeks old, he had diarrhea and I did not realize that is what it was until it was over. I felt horrible and wished I had called the ped. I hope things get better.

I would call the Ped and when they are that young a good thing to do is leave a diaper off, the air is good for the rash. It can be kinda messy, but its better than the skin rubbing against the diaper.

I think that is excessive, call the ped for sure!

What worked for me was using only cotton and water, then drying the area with a paper towel (dabbing it) then applyhing a mixture of vaseline and desitiin (white one, zinc). You should see an improvement by the next day.

Stay away from Huggies, they also gavce my dd a rash when she was young, that age about.

I don't know if I am over-reacting, but I would call my PEDs emergency line after that many poops, I would be worried about dehydration.

I would call the peds emergency line for that many poops in such a short time period. I would be worried about dehydration.

The same thing happened to my DS when he was 5 weeks. If it is really red like the skin is burned use bacitracin and a diaper cream. With my DS it went on for a week and 1/2 , I switched all formulas and it finally stopped with soy formula. Call the doctor and give the new formula a chance to work, chances are if she is eating good they will ask you to call back in a few days. It was disgusting but you will pull through.

so i brought her to the ped this morning (along with my 17 month old--that was an adventure!)

they're not "worried". said it is probably a cold or some type of virus since it just started yesterday and she's been on formula since birth. i have to give her pedialyte every hour until 12 and then half soy formula/half water until 3 and call the ped then with an update.

this morning she's already a little better--it's definitely not as excessive as yesterday.

and yesterday, she was drinking normally (actually more than normal since she's having her growth spurt) so i wasn't worried about dehydration. i had pedialyte in the house already and was ready to give it if she didn't look right or wouldn't eat

Put her in a warm bath with3 TBL of baking soda to soothe the rash. As OP said-if you can get a roll of Viva papertowels and a squirt bottle clean her that way. Also let her ;ay on the changing table for a few minutes to air out her skin. I like to use mylanta on a cotton ball-let dry, then use a clear protector(A&D, Aquaphor, Desitin clear) followed by triple paste

When my son was about 8 months old we went through this. He has TERRIBLE diarreah. My pediatrician had me buy Similac Isomil DF. I could only find it at babies r us. It was the most AMAZING stuff ever! Within 2 days everything was back to normal again. I actaully still have a leftover bottle because I bought 3 bottles of it and only needed 2 :)
