how is your third grader doing in school
my kid is doing terrible! she's an average student.
I'm not sure if it is the teacher or the new common core teaching.
I need to get feedback from others...
please let me know.
THANKS!

Re: how is your third grader doing in school
My DD is in third grade. She has always been a good and strong student. She picks things up quickly and is used to doing alot of work. However I have noticed some negative changes in her this year, specifically laziness, trying to take short cuts, not reading as much, rushing ect.. She has also had some struggles with math. We are in NYC and they use the 'Everyday Math' curriculim which is horrible! I have to re-teach much of it at home. Hopefully the year starts to look up!

Re: how is your third grader doing in school
DS is in 3rd and doing well... He is a good student and picks things up very easily, so studying with him is torture because he really doesn't need it. The hardest part for him is "showing his work", especially in math. He reads a problem and can do it in his head, but the teacher wants them to show the work in a notebook and he balks at it.

Re: how is your third grader doing in school
I am a third grade teacher, and I just wanted to let you know that there is a HUGE shift in curriculum and expectations between second and third grade, and the common core standards have upped that exponentially. If your daughter is having trouble adjusting, she is not alone.
Just keep encouraging her and stay on top of her school work. If her teacher offers extra help, see if you can have her included.
It will get better as long as she's trying her best!

Re: how is your third grader doing in school
My third grader has lived a sheltered academic life up until now. He never really had any tests in second grade and he had an awful teacher who expected little and graded little. Now he has an excellent teacher but she does expect alot. And for the first time ever my son has to study for tests. His spelling tests are getting progressively harder. He had his first geography test the other day and he got a 99! I am so proud but honestly it did not come easily for him. I studied with him three afternoons in a row, thought of study tricks and made extra practice sheets with him. I am a teacher, but I don't think I can keep up this pace for him. I work fulltime as a 4th grade teacher and I can tell you its plenty of RIGOR! Especially for the teacher and parents.
