doing away with school tax
anyone get that letter in the mail on voting for this? i did and was curious exactly what it means. i remember reading about it a couple of months ago but now voting is coming up for that.
my husband says they are going to decrease school taxes over 5 years and then there will be NO MORE school tax as the state will be funding it. is that true? and if it is, why would the state do that. and why haven't they been doing it all along?

Re: doing away with school tax
I've never heard of this. Even if the State were to fund it, the money has to come from some where. That means state taxes (income, sales, etc.) would be going up. We would wind up paying for it in some manner no matter what. It would just be spread out across the entire State. I can't see people upstate being fine with paying for our school taxes.

Never heard of that, and I doubt it would happen. Wish it would because my school tax is ridiculous

Re: doing away with school tax
its another election time lie. I don't even remember what politician or party is marketing this but it makes no sense. As someone else said, the money has to come from somewhere. One way or another we'll pay.

I doubt this would happen......and IMO it would be pretty horrible if it did.....That would mean the state controls the amount of money each school district received.....say goodbye to the better school districts and hello to cutting school programs.....and the tax will still be there....it will just be a higher state tax instead of a school tax...

I doubt it will happen too. I received that letter as well. The State controls how much schools get now anyway - they send funding to every district I thought. I know in Plainview one year they had to give money back to the state because the state sent it to them by accident. Plainview had to lay people off in order to work it into the budget.

Re: doing away with school tax
I think a politician sent this letter as an advertisement of their platform I didn't pay to much attention to it b/c I was like yeah right. The state does fund a lot of these schools but if they did away with our school taxes Suozz and others could not give himself a pay raise. Sorry i'm a skeptic but would love if this happened. Unfortunately i think very little of our taxes goes to the schools. I can attest to that in my district.

Re: doing away with school tax
for people who say they doubt it...i want to point out that i believe it may be for suffolk county only (which is where i am)
and it is NOT a political thing. It is something that has been PASSED by the senate and now is something you can vote on. a couple months ago, they were talking about it in the papers. but now it has been passed for voting.

Re: doing away with school tax
never gonna happen. they might increase state funding which would make the taxes decrease a little. The only way for them to significantly drop is to start consolidating districts. It will NEVER disappear completely.
