How long before a newborn can keep paci in mouth?/Best paci for BF baby?

DS BFs contantly while awake. Sometimes I think he just needs to suck. He tries to take paci with the wide mouthed frantic latch like he's latching on the breast. If he ever gets the paci in his mouth, he can't hold it in for more than a minute or so.

How old before they hold onto it better?

Can you recommend the best paci for a BF baby?

Thanks!

DS will be a year in a few weeks and he still uses the Soothie's from the hospital.

He's been using them since the first day he was born.

DD is EBF - never had a bottle. I started figuring that she just wanted to suck too, like you said. When i first gave her the paci she was like "What the..." but then soon got the hang of it and just LOVES it now. DD only likes the straight nipples (will fuss with the ones that curve). Much like the ones the girls already posted. I didn't start her on it until maybe a couple weeks shy of 3 months. (she's 5 months now)

I really think it depends on the baby. DS was 3 weeks or so. We had a mam and he liked it. He didn't get a paci in the hospital. But it depends on the baby's tastes and the way it feels I guess lol We only really needed to hold it when we first put it in. Some babies don't like pacis though.

Thanks everyone. I'm trying the soothie. He's getting a tiny bit bette but it still pops out a lot. Hopefully in a couple more weeks he'll be able to hold it better.

DD is 10 weeks. I only recently started to give her a paci, but she still doesn't keep it in her mouth. We use the soothies, but have tried mam and dr. browns as well.

DD likes the MAM pacifiers. I ended up offering it to her 2 days after we got home from the hospital despite the nurses advice not to. I was EBFing but she just wanted to suck on something all the time. Fortunately, it did not interfere at all with BFing and even now she is not dependent on it.

Same for us. He seemed to really take to the mam, however at first he fought us on it. It was almost like we had to train him how to use it. Now, he's almost 5 months and he is really soothed by it.

ETA: I read in the Baby Whisperer that most babies will suck ferociously on a paci for about 7 minutes before they slow down and spit it out, usually when they are going to sleep.
