I know they expire after a certain amount of time. Does it depend on the bank?

I would cash it ASAP. I hate it when people hang onto my checks for a long time. I forget I wrote them and then it's a shock when the $$ comes out. I would say 6 months to a year would be the maximum.

Although banking laws differ from state to state, most states consider that checks in excess of 6 months old are considered “stale dated.” Contrary to the conventional wisdom, stale dated checks can still be cashed successfully. However, the drawee's bank has the right to refuse payment on the check or “bounce” it.

Thanks! I have a few checks made out to my DD, but I haven't gotten a chance to open up an account for her yet. Can I cash them myself if they are made out to her?

Not usually. You will need to open a custodian account. That will require her original SS card.

I believe you can without opening an account in her name. You have to sign it and write "Parent and Legal Guardian of ____"
