ETA ~ it really depends on what it is for. I give people with babies a little longer, especially now that I understand firsthand

Re: How long do you wait to get a Thank You...
well depends for me.... if it was for a shower or birthday, then maybe like 2-3 weeks. If it was for a wedding, then I'd wait longer because of the honeymoon, then the time it takes to go thru all the gifts, plus I don't know if they are waiting to have special cards or pictures printed to send... so maybe a couple of months for something like that.

honestly I never give it a second thought. I don't assume that everyone that receives a gift will send a thak you card.

Re: How long do you wait to get a Thank You...
It really depends. IMO, a lot of people don't even send them which is really annoying. Including my BF who lives in Chicago. I wait about a week after I know she should have got it and then I send her an email to make sure she got it. So rude!! I don't always need an official TY not, but a quick email would be nice. Sorry for the rant....

I don't either--it is nice to get one but I don't hold it against someone if I don't. i swear with all the thank you'in and gift giving it's amazing we all have time to appreciate what we have been given or have to be thankful for. I do send thank you cards but I am big on personalizing them so it takes me a month usually. Whats the point if you write the same thing in everyone's card you know?

Maybe but I also think its silly to send a gift and be upset at someone because they didn't send a thank you in what you think is an appropirate time.
A gift should be given with out ANY expectations.

Yes, but if you aren't physically there when a person opens a gift, I think a TY is in order. Even a phone call TY is acceptable to me. There's nothing worse then sending a gift and not knowing if it was received. It's just rude to not send a TY.

Of course if you are there you shouild say TY, I'm just saying people waste alot of energy on being disappointed because someone else does not do something just like they would like them to. I think if you send a gift don't sit around counting the days wating for a TY, if you get one great if not, no biggie.

Not upset, you are probably misintrpreting the tone of what I wrote.
If I recall it was you who said to me that you thought that what I orginally wrote was rude. So I was just responding to you.
To answer your question, yes I write TY notes, and I also give gifts but it has never crossed my mind to look a the calendar and wonder why someone I gave a gift to has not send me a TY, I never gave it a second thought. I give a gift and wait for NOthing in return.

Well I guess I just don't think that makes a person rude, we can agree to disagree.

Re: How long do you wait to get a Thank You...
I think it's very rude not to send a TY. Yes, one gives gifts without any explicit expectations, but we all have implicit expectations of one another. I don't know anyone who, for example, gives a friend support above and beyond and then would be unaffected when that level of friendship is not available to her when she needs it. I know of very few people who would continue to call people, engage with them, and add to their lives in all kinds of ways if these actions were recognized/reciprocated. At a certain point, it's so rude that it's too awkward to go one as friends. I know of noone who really will give endlessly with no expectations of reciprocity or at least some kind of gratitude in return.

Re: How long do you wait to get a Thank You...
I never expect a formal thank you after giving a gift...
We attended a wedding and didn't receive a thank you until 11 months later.
That's just one of those things I don't really think about. Although I'd appreciate a card or call, I don't really mind if I don't receive either.

I don't expect one either. It's nice to get one but i won't completely write someone off if i don't get one.
I have a friend who keeps track of who gave her a thank you and who didn't. If a birthday comes up for the non thanker they don't get a gift . Being like this undermines the whole point of giving.

Re: How long do you wait to get a Thank You...
I think it's ungreatful for someone not to acknowledge a gift. By acknowledge, I mean phone call, email, maybe a note. If I spent time picking out the perfect gift for someone, I'd be hurt if they just blew it off.
