How long to switch over to formula?HELP!

I think I'm in trouble. We only have a few bags of BM left (like 3-4 days worth). I gave her some formula mixed into her bottle this morning (1 oz to 3 oz of BM), and she TOTALLY refused it.

Did I totally screw myself and DD?

Re: How long to switch over to formula?HELP!

I decided to just go cold turkey with the formula because DD refused it mixed...I offered only the formula and she took it when she was hungry enough (by the end of the first day). I think it helped that she missed her last planned nursing session the night before and we started a new day offering only formula...

Thank you for your reply.

So basically, I can be assured that this child will not willfully starve herself? She will eventually take formula....?

Ugh, I can't believe how stressful this is.

I give DD formula now when we go out and we BF when at home. For a while she refused to take the formula but I found as long as I only give her formula in the bottle and no BM she will drink the formula. I also find she won't drink it if she isn't hungry - so I would say your DD will drink the formula but she might put up a fuss until she is actually hungry - can you cut back on those last few BM feedings and give formula and save the BM for when she is just won't take the formula no matter what you try.

I can only speak for my daughter (who is quite strong-willed), but she did not starve herself! She drank her formula bottles for a while only when she was really hungry but after about a week, she took them no problem! I think its worse on us than it is on them! Good luck!

i am thinking that as long as your DD is now eating table food you don't have to worry like you would if she was much younger. i had to stop BFing a little while ago and DD would NOT absolutely NOT accept formula. so i went right to whole milk instead. however, she is not allergic and does eat a good amount/variety of table food. ask your Ped. for advice too-mine helped me a lot with this transition.

When I had to switch DS to formula, he screamed for about an hour before he took it. The second day, only half an hour, and the third day he took it fairly quickly. Don't give up, it might just take a few days.Chat Icon

Re: How long to switch over to formula?HELP!

I have been weaning DS for two months as I am cutting down feedings verry slowly. For the first week he refused the bottle/formula almost completely. Now 4/5 of his feedings are formula and, unfortunately, unless he is very sleepy or starving the feeding never goes very well Chat Icon

I started with giving one bottle a day - not sure if you have that luxury, but mine took it pretty well.
