Re: How many children did your parents have?
Posted by dm24angel
I felt very alone growing up, no one to talk to, I was alone alot..I spent a lot of time with adults.
i had great relationships with friends, cousins, etc, but always wanted my own sister or brother.
Today as an adult, I feel alone. If my Mom passes away and or when, I will be alone. I have no help in dealing with her, and when she gets older. I feel like its all on me a lot of the time.
I just hate it for so many reasons.
I understand your position.
I'm technically an only child. HOWEVER, and there is always a however...
My mom got remarried and I have 3 older step sisters. They were all at lest 7 years older than me and by the time I came along, they were out of the house.
Then my dad got remarried and had two children with his wife. Nice and all, I technically have 2 half siblings, BUT, and there is always a but...I was 25 and 27 when they were born.
The pros...I'm super close to my mom, I actually feel more like my grandparents were my parents and my mom is my older sister. Not to take any credit at all from her, but rather to say that we are close.
The cons...just what Donna said. When either parent gets old and needs to be taken in, it's all me. And I always felt I had to be extra cautious in things because I never throught my mom could survive me dying in some stupid accident or something.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
I am an only child - and my family calls me the "miracle baby" -- my parents were told they could not have children - and they tried for about 8 years or so - and then came me!!!
I loved being an only child - but I also grew up with an extremely tight family and basically spent everyday after school with my cousins - so it's not like I was coming home to an empty house for hours.
I don't even mind not having a sister/brother now. I see how competitive it gets in some families and I know I am very lucky to have my parents and all that they do for me.

One. I liked being an only, but that's all I know--can't compare it to something I didn't experience.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
My parents had 3 children and I am the Middle Child with an Older and Younger brother.
My older brother is 2.5 years older and my younger brother is 2 years younger. I like the age difference between us. We always had something in common even if we were in a phase of hating each other.
While I am a middle child being the only girl sort of takes some of the negative effects away in that I got special attention because I was a girl. Also, my mom was an only girl and middle child so she totally felt my pain. On the other hand, as the girl, I was expected to do the "girl" chores more but never seem to get excused from the "boy" chores (mowing the lawn, garbage, etc.). That always ****** me off. I also always dreamed of having a sister and I still wish I had that sort of relationship in my life.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
Oldest of three
Im 26
Brother 25
Sister 17
I like being the oldest but I also got and still get the most criticism from my parents. My brother was a little younger and a boy and had MANY more freedoms than I did. Dont get my started on my spoiled rotten 9 year younger sister...

Re: How many children did your parents have?
I am the oldest of three and wouldn't have it any other way. My sister is 2 yrs younger than me and my brother is 10 months younge than her! My sister grew up a chubby kid, picture the Campbells soup kid! She says it's because they kept feeding her to take care of the baby

Re: How many children did your parents have?
I am basically an only child. I have a half-sister, but she's the black sheep - she was too busy running away from home to really be around much when I was younger. So, I just say I'm an only child.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
8 of us born (7 of us living)
Me 11 months later Reilly 11 months later Karen 2.5 years later Tammy 1.5 years later Robert(premie, did not make it) 2 years later Coleen 1 year later Irene 2 years later Thomas
loved being the oldest. never resented the big family for a moment. I loved the babies. They are my best friends.
pros: all the exciting firsts were mine. I knew how to care for babies, were the younger ones are clueless. We are lucky, we all speak to each other daily. I love that my baby has these great people in his life. I am so adaptable. If I were on Real World, no one would have a living issue with me. We have never had any conflicts with college roomates.
cons: I am going to be a very old bridesmaid on day.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
Edited to fix:
How many children did your parents have?
They had 5 children. One was born and died the year before I was born.
Where were you in the order?
Parents married in 1956 Sister born in 1957 Sister born in 1959 Brother born in 1962 Brother born in 1969 Me - born in 1970
How many years apart (if more than one)?
8
I am eight years younger than my brother.
Did you like your position (as in, if you were an only child did you like it?) Pro's and con's of amount
I like my position just fine.
Pros - I was spoiled yet remain grounded and my parents were too tired to discipline me more than they did.
Cons - I am forever the baby and never taken seriously enough.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
My parents had two children. My brother is 11 years older than me. My mother had 3 miscarriages in between us. I was, pretty much, an only child. I didn't mind it. I, certainly, had my parents' attention. Especially, my father. I was, definitely, "daddy's little girl". He always made me feel special.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
How many children did your parents have? 5 children (girl, girl, boy, boy, girl)
Where were you in the order? I am the oldest.
How many years apart? We are 31 (well 32 in 3 weeks!!!), 31, 27, 22 & 20.
Do you like your position in the family? I did when we were younger......I always felt helpful......feeding the little ones, changing diapers helping out!!
Now not so much now though.....I feel that even though I am only 10 1/2 months older then my sister after me, it sometimes feels like 10 years now The 4 youngest all have more in common, so I sometimes feel left out (sometimes I AM left out of things )
I guess the above also qualifies as the con!! Other cons: I always had to share a room, which was actually the casue of me moving out & living at my grandmothers for 5 years from 19-almost 25 years old. When I graduated HS, my baby sister was just finishing pre school.......sharing a room was tough & caused TONS of tension at home.........I had school & then work. I would come home, eat & be ready to study by 9......and she was going to bed. The house was small & the was no privacy & no quiet space. So I left.
My parents were pretty hard on me especially as a teenager. Things that I was grounded for or accused of doing even if I hadn't are now acceptable everyday things in my parents house.
I frequently say that the parents I grew up with are NOT THE SAME ones my younger siblings have now ...where they went I don't know, but they no longer exist
Pros: Well, I guess growing up in house full of siblings was never boring! I always had a playmate!!!!!

My brother and I are 5 years apart, he's the older one. He's techinically my half-brother but we never considered it that way. We weren't close growing up(years 5-12), it was the brother/sister thing and being so far apart in age. I always wanted him to play with me and he couldn't be bothered. He still remembers the day I was born and was very protective over me. We started geting close once he left the house and went into the Navy. We are very close now.

Re: How many children did your parents have?
Technically - my mom had 3 kids. I had an older brother that dies 3 days after he was born.
Then there's me and my brother who is 2 years younger than I am.
Growing up, I was the "responsible" one - never allowed to do anything - more mature. My brother got whatever he wanted - and there were usually no consequences for his actions.
Even though we are only 2 years apart, we are not close at all. I wish it wasn't like this.
