how many days do you do cardio vs weight training
So, my neighbor is starting to train me. I haven't done any weight training so far but she wants me to do 3 days of cardio and 3 days of weight training and on the days I do weight training not to do cardio. This is giving me some anxiety and I went to the gym with her tonight to do weight training and if it wasn't closed, I would have gone back LOL! She is doing a total body workout for weight training but it still concerns me as I have a lot of weight to lose and feel cardio is best. Any suggestions?

Re: how many days do you do cardio vs weight training
Oh days I focus on strength training, I do lighter cardio after, never skip - especially for weight loss. You're not trying to build mass so I don't see why she'd have you do less.
And for what it's worth, I have a degree in Exercise Science and several certifications.
ETA: I say lighter cardio bc your body should be exhausted from strength training and not be able to go as hard.

Re: how many days do you do cardio vs weight training
It's not necessary to do cardio everyday even if you are trying to lose weight. When I lost my weight, I was doing 3 weight training days and 3 20 minute HIIT sessions a week. You can end up doing more harm than good by over training. (I am there now..trust me it stinks!)
When I was competing, I did cardio daily not because I HAD to, but because I enjoy it. I still do it daily pretty much because I love to run etc.
Something you can do (that I LOVE) is add your cardio into your workout. I sprint between sets using the cardio equipment or just doing plyos etc.
Some of my cardio sessions are 40 minutes of medium intensity, some are 20 min HIIT and some days I will take classes for an hour. I try to keep things different so I don't get bored.
Every trainer will tell you something different. Trust the person you are working with and follow the plan. If it doesn't work, you can adjust. But if you do something different from what they ay it will be more difficult to see progress int he end! Hope that helps!

As far as not building mass, she probably is wanting her to put on soem muscle which in turn will help the metabolism in the long run.

I do 5-6 days of cardio and 3 days of resisitence training (with a day rest day between). My workout schedule usually looks like this:
Saturday - 45 min cardio followed by 30 minutes of resistance Monday - 60 minutes of cardio Tuesday - 30 minutes cardio - 30 minutes of resistance with a trainer Wednesday - 45 cardio Thursday - same as Tuesday Friday - if I get the chance to work out, I either go for a run or do 30 minutes of cardio at the gym. Lately, I haven't been able to get a workout in on Fridays.

Laymens word choice - meant it in terms of increasing body size.
