Our government has many different layers with different powers and responsibilities. You can argue states shouldn't do this. I argue states shouldn't have to do this, however, there is a too large part of the population who gives into vaccine propaganda BS that now they have to. It has some fallout where people with legitimate medical reasons for not being able to comply are in a problematic situation and those should be worked through. I don't know the process for medical exemptions, but there should be one with doctor input.
I 100% agree with this, if we didn't have majority of people jumping on the Vaccine bandwagon and using medical/religious exemptions to not vaccinate their child, government wouldn't have to step in. Blame these people who mess it up for the ones who actually can't get vaccinated. I think people use these extreme cases for their defense. For no good reason because no one is saying vaccinate your child that is allergic or can die from it.
One of the reasons I am happy my son goes to catholic school. But this does not effect me as well, I vaccinate my son and he just had his round of shots for his 11th bday and Flu.
Yup. If someone has a medical exemption, fine. If people want to listen to criminals jailed for their harmful debunked lies and celebrities with no training, that's fine, but the rest of our kids don't have to be subjected to them--especially when the people with the medical exemptions are the most vulnerable. We had several families asked to leave, and that's just fine. This is not something to mess around with.

I thought Catholic (or any other private schools really) we’re not exempt from this new law anyway. Otherwise an easy solution would just be to send your child to a private school, no? Unless I’m misunderstanding you.

I'm sorry but again, this is just not true. Unfortunately most people believe the above. I actually don't know any families that don't vaccinate because of the "vaccine bandwagon" but I do know MANY families that in the past used medical/religious exemptions to protect their child. You are wrong that no one is saying to vaccinate children that could have an adverse effect from the shot. You are very wrong. I know this because my child DID have a life threatening reaction to a vaccine and is still forced to continue vaccinating if she wants to stay in school. I pray every time I give her a vaccine. It's horrible honestly. And I know MANY of the others that had exemptions and are now doing the same to keep their kids in school. A child who has a rare form of hemophilia and the doctor said vaccination could kill them - they had to move out of state because they can no longer get a medical exemption here and who wants to risk their child's death? I have another friend who has two children with auto immune that was triggered by vaccines as per her DOCTOR and specialist who all filled out medical exemptions. Guess what, now she has to homeschool. I could go on and on. This is not an extreme myth - this is my life and the lives of real people I know.
In the end I would just say - people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I would bet all the money I have that if you watched YOUR child suffer a life altering or threatening reaction to a vaccine you would not be feeling the same. And if you think you would then have a legitimate reason not to vaccinate - YOU ARE WRONG. I've been in the situation and I am an attorney and I am telling you the laws in NY are not this way.
People really don't know what is going on right now in our state in the last few months unless they are personally impacted by it. It's a horrible position to be put in to have to decide between potentially physically injuring your child or metally injuring them by having to pull the out of school It's very sad.

I vaccinate my kids...but I’m going to play devils advocate for a minute.
How do we know if the staff that works in our schools is vaccinated? I was thinking about the situations that my kid is exposed to when they are around others who might not be vaccinated (sports, religious activities, libraries, etc.)
I guess, while I support vaccines for school aged children (unless there is a medical reason not to), how can we ever be sure who is surrounding our kids?

Catholic school you can't claim religious exemption and you have to vaccinate your children. That is what I was saying, there isn't a huge debate at my sons school over this.

There are people on this forum that say they use these exemption or know people who use this because they don't believe in vaccines and I know plenty of people who don't choose to vaccinate because of the whole debunked autism scare etc.
As I clearly stated, obviously I don't believe kids who can be truly effected medically should get vaccinated. So I don't need to watch my child get sick from a vaccine to have empathy or believe those children should be exempt. I am not sure what your point was there.
However, I am 100% against people who have no real reason except for the fact that they don't believe in it or western medicine etc. Those people should keep their kids home. That is my stance but I am very pro vaccines.

This is what I agree with. These are the people who are putting the one's who medically CANNOT get vaccines at risk. If everyone who could get them would, then the herd immunity would be greater and it would be safer for those with a true medical condition preventing them from getting vaccinated. But a LOT of people just chose not to over debunked nonsense, not believing in western medicine, worrying about things that are disproven etc. And they ruined it now for everyone else.

You are blaming the wrong people. The law was enacted because there are people who were filing bs medical and religious exemptions. Whether or not you personally know them is irrelevant. They exist. They are the reasons for the laws. Blame them.
