How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

DH is STILL at work. Left at 8AM!
Just called "I plan on leaving around 8".
I LOVE him for what he does, I LOVE I can be a SAHM, but, sometimes, I can't stand his job!

For those of you with DHs that work late hours AND different hours everyday..I mean one night DH walks in at 6:30, the next 7, the next 8..It's NEVER the same.
I wait for him to get home and have dinner with him. DS eats prior to us.
It just sux that we hardly all eat together (except on weekends).

When DS is older and more into table food, I think I'll be eating with him and DH can just "reheat".

Is that what you ladies do?

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

DH is in the military. He gets paid little to begain with and doesn't get paid for working overtime so the days he works 12's I go insane. Some days he works 14 hours and still brings home the same paycheck so it doesn't seem worth it. Can't wait till he is a dentistChat Icon

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

DH works late at least 4 nights a week (gets home well after 10, sometimes 11). He always works Saturday's too, so sometimes I feel like a single mom. I know he works hard and has to be there. We rarely eat together, maybe only on Sunday's, when he is off. The kids don't see him on some days, he's gone before they wake (they sleep in until 9) and he gets home long after they are in bed.

The one thing that helps, especially with my older one, is that DH calls him during the day to talk to him. DD is way to young for that though. And if he can take a day off on Tuesday, he stays home and I work my PT job in the office, so he has them all day to himself. Not exactly a good trade-off, but it works.

And not to sound mean, but if he happens to be home early one night, he totally throws off the routine I have and gets me madChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Dh has an awful schedule. It involves LONG days and LONG hours.

It has always been a source of stress between us. I don't see it changing anytime soon either Chat Icon

My DH has his own business. Every day he comes home at a different time, but its always after Jordana's bedtime. But I know he is building a business for us. It sux sometimes. I wish I had a husband who worked 9-5, but I don't. I try to enjoy my time alone after DD goes to bed.

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

When I first went back to work he was still working late a lot and it was making me mad because I felt like I was doing just as much during the day as him and then having Logan at night and never getting a break.

So we negotiated a schedule.

Every Monday is his work late night. I know not to plan dinner or expect him home and that I'm on Logan duty.

Then Tuesdays are my evenings to do whatever I need to do, even if it's just chilling out and watching TV while he handles the bath and bed.

The rest of the week we alternate and "flex" depending on how busy the other's week at work is.

It's cut down on so many arguments.

Mine does. We only have dinner as a family on the weekends. During the week I eat with the kids and he either re-heats or figures out something for himself.

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

Mine....he works nights so he leaves at 6pm & isn't home until 5:30-6:30 am most days (lots of OT) & then on Sat. he may work for his friend driving up to NH...it's tough. We try to make the most of our time together but it gets hard & the days we don't get to talk is when the trouble starts (after 3-4 days)

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

We have a weird situation. DH has a normal 8:30-5:30 job but I work afternoons into the night, so it's a little different every night. On Mondays Ds comes home (my mom watches Ds at the house) and gets DS ready for bed and feeds him dinner, but waits for me to get home around7 and we eat together. On Tuesdays I bring DS to my MILs and DH geos there after work and they all eat dinner together. Dh brings me leftoevers and I eat alone when I get hom around 8:30. Wednesdays I only work until 6:00 so we all eat at my MILs and Thursdays I pick Ds up from my mom's around 6ish and then go home and we all eat dinner together.

Mine works nights. He gets home at 2am. It succks. I get very little sleep between DS waking up 2x a night for feedings and DH coming home and waking me up, then waking me up when he comes to bed.

I am hoping this is temporary.

Thank You Ladies.
I think it's just going to be this week with the extra long hours.
I think I was just frusturated (and usually am) that he does not have a set schedule. It's hard to plan anything.

When I worked FT, I worked 7:30-4:30 M-F and knew I'd be home by 5. With his job, you never know what time he can come strolling in.

TY for replying and listening.Chat Icon

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

DH has crazy hours also. You'd think being self employed it would be more flexible but most of the "busy time" is in the evenings unfortunately. He sometimes doesn't get home until around 9pm. We NEVER eat together except for the weekends.

It sux that I do most of the work with the kids but I'm used to it so I never feel like I can't do something without his help.

DH always gets home after 7pm, but usually before 8pm. I always eat a 6, 6:30 b/c I hate eating late. I will reheat whatever I cooked and will sit with him holding the baby at the table while he eats.

Dh works long hours - most nights he isn't home until 730 or 8 or even later - some slower nights I am lucky to get him home at 7. I guess it isn't too bad if he worked in the city he would be working those hours and then commuting. We do late dinners and she goes to bed shortly after he comes home so he can see DD for a bit. We try to make weekends family time (when he doesn't bring work home with him) but honestly a lot of it is spent doing errands and other things that need to get done around here.

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

My DH works long hours as well. He leaves the house at 7 am and usually isn't home until about 7:30- 8:00 pm. He works in the city and the commute alone is 1 1/2 hours. Even when he calls and says he is leaving work, I get so excited when it's 6:00- but then with the commuting, he still doesn't walk in the door until 7:30.

DH is a police officer and works the midnight shift and always does overtime in the morning too. And of course when he comes home he needs to sleep. It is hard... Chat Icon

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

right now dh is working two jobs..he leaves by 6am to get to his job site (hes a constuction electrician) and then comes home about 4:15 - he showers/changes and eats dinner in all of 20 minutes and then goes to his night job and then gets home the latest 10p..so some days its very very long..he will be leaving the part time night job in another 2 mths so it will get easier then i hope. but i try not to let it bother me bc hes doing this so i can stay home.

My DH works every day from 12-12 (with commuting) we have always been like this so I am used to it. It stinks only having the weekends together and it's the only time we can have a meal together but we try and make the most of our weekends. I feel like a single Mom a lot. It stinks but you do what you have to do.

DH works leaves the house at 7:00 AM and on average gets home around 7:30/8:00 sometimes 10:00. Chat Icon
With the holiday season its much later.
Before DS was born I would cook and wait for him to come home to eat or just eat cereal or something along the lines of that. I didn’t want to cook and eat alone. Now that DS is here and eating table food I cook and eat with DS and make DH a plate.

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

DH doesn't usually get hom until 8pm, sometimes later. I finally stopped waiting for him because I just can't eat late at night. Now DS and I eat together. We will be moving in January and after thatDH should get home at a decent time so we can all eat together.

Re: How Many of Your DH's Work Long/Late Days?

Oh this is my life!
DH normally works until at least 7:30 -8 pm and that is a good day (sometimes he is there until 10-11pm). I have slowly moved DS schedule down to eating dinner at 7:30-8pm and bed at 9:30-10 so he at least sees DH once in awhile. DH is gone by 6am and DS doesn't even get up until 9.
It totally sux!
