I hope and pray that those of you who had over $150K was because you sold a house first.

I have $25-50 now, hoping to put down 10% on a house in the $350 range and pay closing costs out of pocket.

I agree...

otherwise I am really jealous!!Chat Icon

I mean what do you do? How long have you been saving and did you live in your parent's basement until you saved enough?!?? Did someone die and leave you money? Did someone give you money???

I mean I am in the 25-50K savings range. Saved for 1 year (debt I had to pay off previous years) and all money is from savings nobody gave me anything. Lived in an apartment and no help.

I think for someone to had that kind of money it has to be from a previous house sale, gift from someone, had help (maybe free rent) or my God you must make a ton of money! Chat Icon

I find that with a LOT of people...they live at home until they get married ...some in mid 20's early 30's...these are most likely the same people who had help paying for their college & wedding too... OR...they have REALLY GOOD paying jobs!Chat Icon

Re: How much did you have in your savings acct before you bought your house - anonymous poll

we had savings and a ton of equity in an apartment, which we sold. When all was said and done, we had a few hundred dollars more in savings than when we started.

we also had equity in a rental property that we still have

Very fortunate we had the equity Chat Icon

Re: How much did you have in your savings acct before you bought your house - anonymous poll

I'll confess... I'm one of those 150+....Seriously though when we bought our house, it was all DH's $$$ my bank account was running dry from all the wedding costs!

In our situation, DH actually closed a couple of brokerage accounts that he wasn't happy with , and used some of his savings for the down payment. We put down a little more than 30% He's a little bit older, and had been living mortgage free in his condo for the past 13 years as he paid it off very early on. So really, he had no debt. And being a single professional he really had nothing else to do with his $$ other than save it and invest it. And yes... he also has a very good job. We definately couldn't afford our mortgage on my salary alone. We live very modestly and well below our means, but we are not too frugal at the same time.

We saved for 16 months...no previous house sale, rented an apartment together for 7+ years (I had been renting for 12 years). No one helped us but us. We have been banking my salary for about a year now and use DH's for bills and additional savings. I make decent money but DH makes a lot more - about 3x my salary.

ETA: we also cashed out some stock options...however we had to pay $15k in taxes as a result Chat Icon

We've been doing something similar. We're banking a little more than half my salary. DH also makes about 3x my salary not including EOY bonus. Our goal is to have the house paid off in the next 5 years. Quite ambitious we know, and I also know that we might not, as life definately throws curve balls at ya!

We didn't have over $150K, but had a lot saved. We both lived at home with our parents until we got married. It wasn't free, but definitely cheaper then renting an apartment. We got married when we were 23 and 24 and closed on our house a month later.
We didn't have ANY help paying for college or the wedding eitherChat Icon And we didn't have great paying jobs.
We both worked during college and after graduating each worked 2 jobs for 2 years to save. I had my full time job and waitressing 20 hrs a week and he had a fulltime job and pizza delivery. We saved as much as possible... no expensive nights out or designer bags or extravagant vacations...It was a lot of hard work but worth it, and we did it on our own.

I think that it is really great how much you have been able to accomplish at such a young age - and your house is absolutely beautiful!!!!

I guess that's our thing...we're only working one job each...ahhh...time to step it up a bit. Chat Icon

Any money I had once in my savings went to living expenses when I was out of work for 8 mths after 9/11...I took whatever I could get. DH also made the "mistake"Chat Icon of being married before and got "zinged" in the divorce.
We also do not do extravagant vacations...(unless you can call a HM in VT extravagant) (No overseas trips for us.) and I'm an upstate "farm girl"...no designer anything for me.

I TOTALLY agree with you 100%...it's hard work but sooo worth it in the end because you did it on your own. That's the way both DH & I were brought up...can't wait to experience that ourselves.... Chat Icon

We had nothing!! We had half our wedding money saved but not in our savings account and the rest was from my parents who saved for my sister and I when we were growing up for this reason.
