We didn't have 150K but we had alot. We rented together and I owned a coop. As soon as we got engaged we went into saving mode. We didn't go out to dinner alot, only one big vacation (our hm) and we are not big spenders on ourselves. We saved a good amount over 2 years and we do not have huge salaries so it can be done!

DH and I met in high school and dated for 7 years before getting engaged. We waited another 2 1/2 years to get married. For those 9 years, we really saved (well I should say DH really saved, me I'm more of a spender). We were both blessed to not have to pay for college or our wedding which I know was huge and I know an exception to the norm for most couples.

We both worked and lived at home until a month before our wedding in 2003. Those 9 years, we didn't do a lot. We went on a few trips, but nothing extravagant. We really did our best to save and pay off any of my debts. We drove older cars, didn't buy fancy stuff, never paid a cent in rent. We went into our marriage with no debt whatsoever.

We bought our first home in April 2003 (3 months before the wedding). We put 20% down ($80K). We bought a living room, bedroom set, kitchen table and a TV and lived in a mostly vacant house for months and months. We bought furniture when we had enough money saved.

This is an old thread but a goodie. I had less than 20K in savings, and regret buying property with less than 20% down. I would never repeat this mistake and wonder how anyone can buy homes with just 3 or 5% down these days (even if the banks are allowing it based on great FICO/income, etc). All it takes is 1 job loss and that house is GONE...Or in my case, the 2008 crash to result in a massive underwater mortgage. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We are looking to buy a house.

We have zero saved. In laws will probably give us $200,000 for down payment.
