How much do I pay MIL to watch DS?

Ok...here is my situation.
I was planning on putting my DS in day care when I had to go back to work.
My MIL did not like that idea and offered to retire early from her job (she was planning to retire in another 2-3 years) to watch my DS 5 days a week, 9-5. She wanted my DS to be watched by family and she felt that day care was a huge cost to us.
She will also have the help of my FIL who is already retired and is very hands on.
My DH and I told her we would pay her and asked her to come up with a figure. She obviously doesn't feel comfortable asking what she really wants, so I need to make her an offer of some kind.

Other info: I plan to pay her every week even if I am on vacation or home from work for some reason.
This will be "off the books".
I will supply everything she needs...food, diapers, baby gear, etc.

Any ideas on where to start?

My first thought was to consider the cost of her early retirement? Is she expecting to replace that income completely? Do you have any idea how much she makes now or if that is even part of the equation? I would ask around to see how much people pay a full time babysitter.

I would figure it out based on how much daycare would cost you, since that is one of her reasons for doing it, to take off some of the financial cost. So, if daycare was $1200 a month, I would pay her $1000. It is probably going to be no where near what she was making, but it has to work for everyone.

We pay my mom $10 an hour but she comes to our home and it's only on a PT basis. I would think obviously it needs to be less than daycare would have cost you.

BUMP

Any other opinions?

Thanks to the girls that replied.......I guess I will figure on paying her a little less than what day care would cost us.

It's just that I have no idea what she is thinking and I don't want to insult her with a figure too low but on the other hand she did say that she didn't want us to pay $1200 for day care.

UG......wish I could be a SAHM.

I would offer her the $1000 for the month and see what she says. She may say its too much or she may say its not enough.

I agree with the $1000 a month ($250 a week).
