How much do you tip the food delivery guy?
I just got food delivered. It was $32.10 and I gave him $35. I definitely got attitude from the delivery guy. It made me not want to tip him more. Now I'm thinking I tipped him too little.
How do you tip? 10%?
I tend to round up to a round number if I pay cash. If I'm paying via credit card, I add about 10%.

we tip a few dollars or 10% depending on the order. usually a little more if its something large or heavy or if its bad weather outside. We probably would have tipped around $3-4 for your order.

Re: How much do you tip the food delivery guy?
I think that would be fine.
If it's pouring rain, I tip a bit more.
My DH & I never see eye to eye on this... he feels if the order is a lot (like, let's say you order 2 pizzas and breadsticks and it comes to 50 bucks or something) - he feels you should tip a lot more....but, to me, it shouldn't make a difference if it's one pizza or 2. (maybe i am wrong ??)
in a restaurant I tip well, but food delivery is usually 3 or 4 bucks.

I'm a very good tipper at restaurants as well.
A lot of the time I order, it was at work and I'd be very generous with delivery tips.
I didn't really think today. I just rounded. His attitude didn't make me want to give him more though.

Re: How much do you tip the food delivery guy?
I tip 20 to 25% at restaurants. I think that food delivery should not be base on the price so I usually tip $3 or 4

I think that was a little cheap to be honest. I wouldnt have given anything less than $5, for that i would have given at least 7.

I never tip less than $5. The guy pretty much did the same job wether your groceries were $30 or $60(depending in the price of your items you could have the same number of packages) KWIM?

For all the people who said they tipped $4-5 minimum, what if the bill is only like $11 or 12? Do you still tip $4-5?
We get delivery a lot. Sometimes I order for just myself. Most of our delivery bills are $20-30 and I tip $3-4.

Yep. I treat it more like a fee then a tip - having some guy deliver food to the door in any type of weather is worth $5 to me.

I'm so happy to read this, because I obviously tip WAY too well. I generally give $7-$10. I'm going to lower my tips and save some money.

I wouldn't necessarily tip less because my food was less.... only because the delivery guy isn't making less based on how much food i order. The distance traveled matters more than the amount of food you are ordering. However I would throw in a few extra dollars if we are talking about ordering food for a good amount of people.
the delivery guys that I know of only get paid a shift pay or they get $5 or less an hour. They work primarily off of tips... they do generally make a little more than servers like waiters and waitresses do as far as "salary" goes (but see bottom paragraph for where that tends to start evening out).
DH delivers food on the side. He says $4 or more is good. We usually try to tip the guys $5. Esp in bad weather. DH said 2 or less is usually a "cheap" or "bad" tip. 3 is OK. 4 or more is good.
Also, what a lot of people don't realize is that most (not all but a lot) of delivery guys use their own cars and their own gas to deliver food. So to deliver food to you they are spending their own money on it. And with gas prices the way they are.....
And ETA: the distance you live to the place you are ordering from matters... it could cut them down on their delivery time for other deliveries and they lose money. Also people in huge apartment buildings are also hard to deliver to. There's usually no parking so they risk getting tickets to bring the food up to you.. then waiting in the elevator and finding your apt... to just get $2... it's not even worth it.

We live in a highrise building in Manhattan. The restaurants are within a 15 block radius and I believe most of these delivery guys are either on foot or bicycle. Not sure if that makes a difference.
I will be sure to tip more. Now I feel bad that I am a bad food delivery tipper!

aww don't feel bad. you were super close to 3. it's not so terrible.
yes, in manhattan they travel by foot or bike. if by foot they have to carry the food and it also probably takes some time.
by bike would be the best bet for manhattan. you would have to be foolish to deliver food by car in manhattan!!
but there's still the walk up (or elevator up)... and I don't think they can deliver to more than one place at a time in a building on a bike (or by foot)... bc they can't leave the food downstairs tied up with the bikes. so they probably can only deliver one delivery at a time. Which cuts down on deliveries per hour and thus how much they make.

Re: How much do you tip the food delivery guy?
It depends on how much food we're ordering + where the person is coming from. I'll tip $2-$3 if I'm just ordering lunch for myself from down the block, but if we're ordering a decent amount of food for a number of people, I usually tip between $5-$10 (depending on how much/how far).

W usually tip between $2 and $4, depending on how much we ordered. All our deliveries come from within 2-3 blocks of our building so there is not much work involved here...
