How much money do you allot for food each week?
I am trying to rework our budget... and I feel like food is a major chunk of our budget each month! How much do you allow yourselves to spend including both food shopping as well as random food purchases such as dinner out, coffee etc. TIA! Also... how many people are in your household?

I spend about $100 week for the two of us. I buy alot of healthy food so I think that might make the price go up.

Re: How much money do you allot for food each week?
we budget $500/month for groceries and our eating out changes depending on the month and other expenses... it does go from $50/month to $100/month
there are three of us: two adults and a teenage boy who is on the track team (he eats as though he has a hollow leg).
this also includes the dog (who used to have his own budgeted amount, but it became easier to add it to the grocery list)

Us too I spend $125 at the grocery store buying only sale stuff and that does NOT include formula, diapers and baby food. Although fortunately DS will be off formula in a couple of weeks.

EDT: there is only two of us...
This used to be us. I did not know how to shop. Once every few months I need a larger shopping to replenish my pantry.
What really helped me is the food thread. The girls there make weekly menus. I try to plan ahead now. Before, we would go to the grocery store daily, eat out all of the time and throw away unused food. I made a new years resolution to really use our leftovers. DH takes them to work for lunches or we will eat them. This was really key for me. I was throwing out so much food that it made me sad. I felt like we were really wasteful.
When something that is non perishable and on sale, stock up on it. I try to use coupons but I am brand specific. I don't just use a coupon because there is one for some random brand. If you are not, you can save a lot of $ that way.
How many local grocery stores are near you? I found that one of the 4 near me is a LOT less expensive so for most things I go there. I don't love the meat there so for that I go to another store. The organic farmers market comes to DHs office, so he picks up fresh fruits and veggies for us there or I go to our local farmers market for them.
I buy the club pack of chicken - 10-13 pieces and sort them into freezer bags. I then marinade them before freezing so that when I want to use them they are already premarinaded plus I saved money because I got the club pack size.
What do you do for lunch? Do you eat out, do you brown bag? DH buys a 2 gallon thing of water and keeps it in his office. He brings his lunch. Occasionally he will eat out. He goes to the cafeteria with his coworkers but just eats what he brought. He brings snacks too. I portion out pretzels, granola bars, fruit, candy, etc and he takes a couple of things for each day.
If I buy a roasted chicken I can get two meals out of it, 1 the roast w/potatoes or orzo and a veggie, and 2 chicken tacos with sides.
How often do you eat out? I like to eat out as much as the next person, but my family likes my cooking and I like to cook for them. I find that if I prep the meal before by making sure I have all of the ingredients it does not take much time, usually tastes better and costs less than if we went out to eat.
eta: we have breakfast at home too.
Perhaps make a spending journal to see where you spend your $. If your typical day looks like this: drive to DD get a coffee and bagel $5 you could have your coffee at home and get bagels from the store. Save $3.75 Snack from vending machine $1 You could bring a snack from home .25 Lunch sandwich, can of soda, chips $8.50 lunch from home sandwich, can of soda chips $4.50 Coffee from starbucks $4.25 Soda from home .75 Dinner take out for two chicken, potato, veggie $18 Dinner at home for two $7 and you have leftovers So you would spend:$36.75 eating out v. $16.25

Re: How much money do you allot for food each week?
wow ok where to start... so we normally buy the club packs of chicken breasts... ill grill 2-3 (Depending on size) on sunday night... that gets used for wraps for my lunch 3-4 times a week....
we buy whole heads of lettuce which get chopped up for salads for DW....
ill bring a yogurt for breakfast, have my wrap for lunch and a jello snack in the afternoon... bringing my own can of seltzer.
i make DWs coffee at home every morning, she NEVER buys lunch...
we eat out maybe 1-2 times a week, other then that I cook at home...
ive cut just about EVERY snack out... no cakes, cookies, etc... my only weakness is ice cream...
i stock up on anything that goes on sale, we have enough toilet paper to last at least till 2012.... tuna, 10 for $10... we buy 20 LOL
maybe ill just have to become my grandmother and start clipping coupons..

Re: How much money do you allot for food each week?
For me, my DH and DS who is 3, I try to spend $100 a week at the regular grocery store and $150 at BJs once a month. We take our lunches and eat out maybe once a week. When DS was in diapers and formula, it was over $200 at BJs each month. I try to buy on sale, but I tend to buy organic if I can and lots of fruits and veggies for the litte guy who eats them liek there's no tomorrow, so I have trouble keeping the bill lower.

I buy what is on sale and I use coupons for nearly every item or I buy store brand to save money. Plus, I only buy what we will need for the week to avoid food going bad and what I know I will cook for the week.

Re: How much money do you allot for food each week?
I still can't figure it out... we spend way too much every month, then we wonder where the money went? My DH is horrible about bringing lunch for some reason and I can't seem to find the time to cook since I get home so late.
I really need some cheap/basic meal ideas!

Re: How much money do you allot for food each week?
I spend around $100 every week.... and there is only 2 of us
But i have to admit there will be times where i can go two weeks w/ out going to the gorcery store. I do my best to bring in lunch to work, but there are times where I do not have any left overs. DH is horrible and will not bring lunch to work so he always buys lunch.
We usually go out to dinner 2 times per week.
I have come to realize though that a majority of our $$ is spent on food...makes me feel like such a fatty

I think some thing to remember is just because you're buying in bulk, doesn't necessarily mean you're saving. I only certain meats at costco/bjs because I can get them cheaper at the supermarket when they're on sale. I watch sales every where. Target and Walmart have snacks (and frozen dinners like lean cuisines) for much cheaper than the supermarket.
ETS: We spend about $65-$75 a week.

Re: How much money do you allot for food each week?
It's just the two of us, and what I spend at the supermarket. If I'm emptying my pantry and freezer, then I just buy the basics and wind up at around $75-100 per trip. I spend more when I am re-stocking the pantry and freezer. I spend even more when DH comes grocery shopping with me. I shop the sales, especially since I am brand specific.
The biggest part of my weekly food bill is the fresh fruits and veggies. I don't skimp on that. I don't have much choice of supermarkets where I live, so I go to the same one every week. I would love to have something other than Waldbaums and Key Food nearby. Every couple of weeks we head up to Stew Leonards.

I'm with you. I usually spend about $150 in the supermarket, but I can go for longer then a week betweeen shopping. But I will pick things up here and there (like meat from the small market on my block), formula from Costco or CVS, and then take out/eating out. If I had to guess, because quite frankly I don't think I want to know the real number, I woud say we spend an average of $200-250 a week on food.

Re: How much money do you allot for food each week?
about $250 a month for three adults.
I do one big shop once a month for items that are on sale.
I buy two family packs of each and portion and freeze when they are on sale for $1.99 lb- Chicken breasts , sausage , chop meat etc.
I really only buy sale items and stock up on non-perishables when they are on sale.
